If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. You'll read it in less than a week. Very good, powerful stuff. Written when Douglass was 27, this little book (about 100 pages) is a literary classic. The world lost a great writer when Douglass had to abandon literature to devote most of his energies trying to abolish slavery.
That is another mystery to me. How did this slave without a formal education get this extraordinary talent from???? He must have mustered and married his indomitable will to his relentless determination and energy to educate himself. His book is so good that there were people back in his day who called into question his authorship. They couldn't believe he wrote it.

He was a genius who went to write other books later on. Check his bio on wikipedia.org

Had to read couple of chapters for my American literature class.
I guess he was born with that amazing powerful talent, as he started quostioning slavery (as it he says in his book) at an early age wondering about his birthday, his father, and why white kids were treated differently.
