Could anyone inform me about Cuban election system. How does it work? What are the responsibilities of those who are elected by the system?

Basic overview (http://members.allstream.net/~dchris/CubaFAQ.html)

Basicly, district meetings are called for the local people (1 per few hundred people) to discuss political issues, both local and national. These meetings are also used to elect representatives to the local municiple assembely. Anyone can becomea candidate in these elections, provided they are nominated by at least one other person (who is eligable to vote). The candidates are then elected by secret ballot, and universal suffrage for those over 16. If no candidate gets a 50% approval rating then there is a second round run-off election, as is common for presidential elections in a number of countries. These representatives are subject to recall at anytime. These municiple assembelies hold a fair ammount of local power and are the main political unit in cuba.

Representatives are also elected to represent the municipality in the Provincial and National Assembelies. Candidates for these positions may be nominated by any voter in the municipality, as well as any local organisation. The municiple assembely then appoints an electoral commission, to consult with trade union officials, womens' organisations representatives, Youth groups etc, and will then choose the best candidate. This candidate has to be approved by a general vote, and recieve 50%+ of the vote, in order to be elected.

The national assembely then elects the Council of State and Council of Ministers, including the President.

This forum rules. It compensates the fact that I do not have time to debate for hours about leftist subjects.
