IV sort of caught the zeigeist of the era when it was made in the 80s. What with Reagan giving it all that "evil empire" rap.

What a shit fucking film.

What? Rocky IV is a great film. Stallone's great speech at the end (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1P5iEaQ_yQ) helped to bring an end to the Cold War and gave hope to millions of Russian people.

During this fight, i seen a lot of changin'... If i can change and you can change, everybody can change!

The best part of this classic piece of cinema was James Brown completely selling out and doing that bullshit-patriotic song in the beginning.

Rocky IV isn't as reactionary as you might think at first glance.

You will notice that Rocky never goes all jingoist, rather it's Apollo that does. Rocky only really goes after Drago because he killed Apollo. So it was personal for Rocky rather than political.

He even seems to think Apollo is going over the top with his shit when he shakes his head during the whole James Brown thing.

However, the message is anticom, more or less and it misrepresents the USSR. Anyone who knows about the Soviet sportsmanship knows that the Soviet people would never boo or jeer athletes from other nations, regardless of political differences. In fact, they where known for this. Especially in contrast to the Canadian team of '72 during the hockey match where the players acted like a bunch of morons towards the Soviets. This behaviour was dramatized in the movie Canada-Russia '72 and aired on CBC this past winter. And you know it was actually making the Canadians look better, so they must have acted even worse.

Another thing that is interesting, the guy that played Micky Goldberg (Rocky's original trainer, Mighty Mick) was banned from Hollywood in the 1950s. It's not clear why, but it was basically a blacklist for people suspected of supporting "un-American activities", usually this meant communists or suspected communists or sympathizers. They killed his character off before making part IV... hmmmm. :)

Burgess Meredith was his name. Same guy who played the Penguin on Batman. He was blacklisted because he was thought to be a part of the "communist infultration" of Hollywood, after he came back from fighting in WW2.

I have a feeling you are just saying this because you want to seem "pro-russia", next time don't try so hard (because we all know Rocky V was a lot worse then Rocky IV).
