so today i went to this second hand book store and picked up an original copy of the first edition of the first english translated version of "das kapital". i know most of you will wonder why i've posted this on the internet but imagine my delight when it was only 10 english pounds. just thought i'd let everyone know.

for 6 dollars USC, I had to have the manifesto specially ordered and shipped from a publisher in NY. Guess it's gotten to the point where most major book stores don't even carry copies of marx's works (wonder why...).

Heh, I don't think that's the case...you would wonder why the Manifesto for instance is hard to find. The Government fears it's text.....for the mere fact that it makes us think, and when the masses begin to use their heads, "bad" things happen.

hardly, you can purchase the manifesto and other communist related texts in any good book store here in oz. One of the good things about this capitalism is that it allows for freedom of speech and expression like this. Remember the USSR would not have any Adam Smith books...

yars..
aaah, maybe it is, but i doubt it. i mean, they would order you any book, even the Anarchy Coockbook if you wanted to. of course it is a bit tricky cuz they always take in your name adress phone # and everything, all of these books that you want and cant find on their shelves they order it to you and each and everyone you order goes under a file. they could send it to the goverment if you order a book such as these, especailly at times like these, when anything you say could be used against you and you could be accused of being a terroist.
maybe with some books, but for the most part, i doubt it, the bookstored wouldnt give two shits aboiut that, if its on popular demand and they make lots of monay, then theyll sell it, but if its books such as the manifesto, which arent really on demand, then they will order some and leave them on the shelves. if their sold out in a specific amount of time then they order some more, if not then they jsut wait till it is asked for again.

dude, i think you are thinking to much into this. You provide them with a name and address so you can build an identity at the book store so in case you want to order more you do it under those details instead of doing it again and again. Also if you request it to be mailed to you it would be pretty hard to do it without an address.

To the best of my knowledge, the first (American) English translation of Das Kapital was published by Charles H. Kerr & Co., in Chicago around 1911. I would imagine there is a somewhat earlier edition published in London, but I have no details.
Dan, I believe you're lost. You are supposed to be over in the "Capitalism vs. Socialism" forum where you may trumpet the virtues of capitalism to your heart's content...and even get a semi-respectful hearing--more than we've ever gotten from your capitalist media.

redstar2000,
Just because i am not a fanatical communist who worships murders such as Lenin, doesn't mean i'm a capitalist. There is more to life then your simplistic and flaws black or white theory. Not all communists were good. You are going to have to accept that. I am allowed to dispell people's qualms about things like providing an address to a bookstore without needing to be criticised by a try-hard leftist who sees everything as counter-revolutionary. Stop being such a hard ass and accept the fact that things like providing an address to a book store is not so the government can have a file of you. They can do that through a social security number.
Are you suggesting that capitalist nations sell communist books as a trick so as to know who purchases them and subsequently who is a communist? Argh, grow up.
P.S. Your ip is being recorded by the government as we speak...

^.^() hahaha!! yah i think i said more than i wanted to.
well, these days, anyone, ANYONE can be considered a terroist, and be watched over by da FBI, all ive said is being recorded, and i ever buy some weird book from da net, theyd know and keep and eye on me, also if i order it from da bookstore.

well why don't we take it further,
they would know all the communist merchandise and stuff you purchase with your credit card because of the fact your details are on it. They would also know what political parties and groups you are involved with as you would provide your details to the group. Filling out internet serveys could be dangerous as they could give hits and tips to the people watching about your communist influences and tendencies...;)

Yes, Dan, there is indeed more in life than my simplistic black and white ideas (actually, RED and white). One of them is spelling. Another one of them is syntax. I know I shouldn't be such a hard ass on a graduate of the Dan Quayle School of Business English...but being a hard ass is what communists do; it's in our job description.
You are not the first nor even the 1,001st person to tell me to "grow up". The reason I have always ignored such well-meaning advice is what I have found that "growing up" turns out to mean to the people who say it so much: "learn to like the taste of shit!"
And yes, Dan, I think you're lost. I think you're looking for exploittheworkers.com or perhaps mindfuckthelefties.com--something like that or worse. I hope you will gravitate to an appropriate site soon.

redstar, you disgrace me for claiming to be communist. i am a communist and i would rather not be associated with people like yourself.

have what IHP? Manifesto and stuff? Collins Bookstars, Angus and Robertson, etc, if you want bigger then obviously Borders and you can purchase that stuff from amazon.com. I want to find a small bookstore in the city or somewhere that has primarily communist books and cheap. I'm thinking the Penguin Warehouse in Camberwell cause i like reading those classics and Das Kapital is part of the Penguin Series so i'm assuming that will be cheap.

redstar, my assumption would be this person doesn't appreciate your belligerence and child-like nature that goes against the selfless and humble way of life of a true leftist.

Dan, on this site we let folks speak for themselves. Don't you have some traffic to go out and play in?

red,
maybe i overestimated your english skills. Hence, MY ASSUMPTION...meaning i did not speak for him but was merely stating my own opinion. Don't worry after a few tries you will master language and its all wonderful features too!
