It was the original labor day to commemorate the actions and achievements of the international workers and labor movement and had its beginnings within the labor protests in 1886 within the US.

May 1 has something to do with the haymarket protests in the US in the 1800s.

That's where the original idea of a worker's holiday came from: the original Haymarket protests in Chicago in 1886 which began on May 1.

May 1st is the international workers day. It gets its roots from the Haymarket riots in Chicago on May 4th, 1886. The Haymarket riots were considered to be the example of the times, and the year 1886 was considered "the year of the great labor uprising" with 1,400 strikes involving approximately 500,000 workers. The struggles focal point was the fight for the eight hour day and the union on the shop floor.

I hope that answered your question... For more info look up Lucy Parsons writing on Haymarket

it seems like a day that should be celebrated
And it usually is. Just look at the May Day immigration rallies last year that brought out millions of people in the US.

As for this year, there will definitely be more protests though it may be some time before specific plans are released/set up.
