My leftist bands of choice right now (as they've been for a long time) are Skyclad, Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down, and Chumbawamba (I know it's nowhere near to being metal, but I still love listening to their them...Although their most commercially succesful album has become my least favourite.)...What more is there out there?

The Haunted!! Peter Dolving is an anarchist- so yay for them. Plus their music is FANTASTIC. Now I'm just holding out for them to do a stoner album. <.<
There are also other metal bands that have leftist overtones but aren't explicitly political, Rammstein, Electric Wizard blah blah blah... My brain just died. :P

At The Gates had left wing views, but you won't really see it in their music. Many of them joined The Haunted though which is more explicit. And judging from where Tuomas Lindberg has turned up he must be left wing too.
Orphaned Land are an Israeli band who certainly don't approve of what Israel is doing to say the least, so they may qualify, a lot of religious themes in there music though.
The old German Thrash bands all have left wing elements. Kreator are very left wing. Mille Petrozza is an Anarcho-Syndicalist and Sodom aren't far behind.

Rage Against the Machine isn't metal but whatever.
Try Lamb of God. Get the song Now You've Got Something to Die For or Hourglass. Great Songs.
One line in particular stands out:
You finally made it home
draped in the flag that you fell for
and so it goes
the ashes of the wake ( screams "wake" so it sounds good)

I just found Valiant Thorr on Guitar Hero II...That fits the bill nicely. ... Orphaned Land was fun to listen to, but I have a hard time fulling immersing myself in death (or deathish in this case) metal...I'll give them another shot.

Megadeth's earlier stuff (Countdown to Extenction and Rust in Peace and of course Peace Sells) has a fair bit of political stuff. Metal isn't the best genre to express urself politically.

I recommend to you all a band called Killing Joke. They're definitely socialists, but at times hinted at being commies. They've been around for 30 odd years but they are as hard as ever. Check them out: band wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_joke)

No way. RATM are pretty cool sure, but they as fuck are rap metal. They aren't really fast or thrashy enough to be part of the many genres of punk + metal.

Ack. Totally sick of being forced to listen to Disturbed... I don't really like them, and I have this friend who's completely obsessed with them atm. Bad combination.
Oh, and apparently they don't even classify themselves as metal- which makes me lol because my friend's friend's think they're totally "metal" (in that Nathan Explosion voice...) but yeah... so not.
But then again these are ridiculous people who weren't even aware of stoner metal until I enlightened them...

You can find a lot of political overtones in some thrash metal (Metallica and Megadeth) and older NWOBHM bands like Iron Maiden (songs like "Run to the Hills", which is about the American Indians fighting the U.S. soldiers and "2 Minutes to Midnight", which is about the impending threat of a nuclear holocaust).
I also want to point out that RATM has very little metal influence and is made up of mostly punk, funk, hard rock, and hip-hop elements. Just by listening to the bass and drums in RATM, one can infer that they have little metal influence.

Like someone else already said, you can check out Lamb of God because, not only are they leftist, but they are also awesome. Also, the metalcore band Darkest Hour has a lot of leftist lyrics. The song 'Vide Infra' by Killswitch Engage talks about egalitarianism regardless of "race or creed or gender". In general, you can usually find a lot of leftist influences in metalcore and death metal music and some black metal.

The main problem with trying to get a specific message across by using metal music is that the lyrics are sometimes inaudible even to experienced listeners depending on the style. Still, if the lyrics are inaudible but are made readily available, the problem is for the most part fixed.

I think that heavy metal since its beginnings always expressed in lyrics, look, and attitude a strong working class point of view, which hadn't necessarily been directly expressed, but it emerges here and there: for exapmle Tipton and Downing of Judas Priest remembering the early period of their band recalled their experiences as working class guys that took the noises of the huge factories in Birmingham and put them in their music, also Halford in his solo albums recalls that things....Tony Iommi actually worked in a factory in Birmingham, and often their lyrics have a pacifist antiwar stand, or even revolutionary, think about Children of the grave

Ya know, Randy wrote lyrics to that song after recording it. They were drunk on Black Label (hence the name) and Randy is just randomly screaming. They used an old sketch of lyrics Randy had already written and published them as Black Label's lyrics.
