Hi,
I've created an online petition that I'd like to pass on to the Communist Party of Canada concerning their name.
For a little background info, visit their wikipedia page HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Party_of_Canada). It's fairly accurate.
For an "in-a-nutshell" description... the Communist Party of Canada (CPC) was created in the early 1920s and for most of the 20th century was very popular and active in labour unions. However, its popularity began to decline in the 70s and 80s, and after the USSR split, the party itself split. Most of the party left to do their own thing. A small minority, however, hung on, and since then has blazed a trail into mediocrity the likes of which the world has never seen. They changed their logo, dropping the hammer & sickle in favour of some wheat and a mechanical cog ontop of a Canadian Maple Leaf. They've also recently renounced revolution, claiming that Canada is no longer an imperialist power, but rather a colony of American capitalism. Their party is completely defunct. Their national convention held in February attracted a whole 65 people. They are completely embroiled in electoral politics and partake in virtually no activism whatsoever.
here's the text of the petition:
To the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Canada:
This is a petition to the Communist Party of Canada, urging them to immediately, or as soon as realistically possible, drop the name "Communist Party of Canada" and and adopt a name that better suits their modified ideology, which in no way reflects, even closely, the ideology that K. Marx and F. Engels envisioned almost 150 years ago.
We ask that the leadership of the Communist Party of Canada do this out of respect for the name of Communism, and that they do so calmly and responsibly.
By signing this petition I affirm that I am a follower of the communist ideology, and that my stance on this matter comes from a communist perspective, as first advocated by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels.
I plan on getting some comrades to present this, in person, to the CPC in Toronto at some point. Hopefully the petition can get more signatures than the CPC has members -- which shouldn't be ALL that hard.
This is not something I take very seriously. I'm well aware there are much better things to waste time on (and I do waste my time on better things). However, I don't see the problem in taking 30 minutes to write the petition out, and then take an afternoon to visit the CPC in person. I mean, c'mon. This obviously isn't what my revolutionary activity revolves around. Anyway, sign this if you feel similarly to the way I do -- that the Communist Party of Canada has failed to live up to its name, and should drop it before it does irrepairable damage to communism's good name.

PS: There's no need to include your full name, for security purposes. A partial name is OKAY. Or, if you'd like, a psuedonym, or simply "Anon Ymous".
