I was channel surfing at work today and I caught this report on CNN about immigration. however they claim this to be a more intimate and personal look at the people who are called immigrants.

There had this reporter inside a restaurant kitchen interviewing all this people who were mainly immigrants from Mexico. the baker, the cook and other people. they all seem happy and proud to work at the restaurant as the reported asked them questions. He got to the dishwasher and the woman who was washing dishes seem shy. and you could tell she didn't speak much or understand much english.

The reporter asked her if she liked working. and she knotted yes! he then went ahead and asked her if she wanted to live in america. and she said YES! and then he asked her "want to work hard and become and american citizen?" and thats when the woman mumbled something or sort of turned away and said something that wasn't audible and the reporter turn to the camera and very enthusiastic said "YES! she wants to be an American Citizen! in fact she says thats the dream of all mexicans"

WHAT THE FUCK?????

i almost threw the damn remote at the damn TV... i didnt finish watching the fucking report. so I have no idea what was said afterwards... :angry:

From the picture you're painting of this, hopefully no idiot would fall for that.

Maybe they said YES because they just arrived and they think that their hard work will pay off and the Amercan Dream will become theirs....

However, there's some people who never really rise above their class no matter how hard they work and become disillusioned.

Well, sorry to say, but the American Dream is sold out.

She said yes because people are starving in Mexico. They have homes that might only have 2 walls and a sheet of metal across the top. Nobody gives a fuck about the American dream they are happy to eat at night.

I know that..yet people always yearn for more, whether its something material, in relationships, etc.

At least I do... :unsure:

The American Dream is, generally speaking, three things:

Owning your own home;

Freedom from want;

Freedom from fear.

The combination of these create a more relaxed and happier mindset than those scratching out a hand to mouth existance on a daily basis, as so many in Mexico do.

I live and work with the people you have written about. That is, in San Diego's Mexican-poverty areas. Many do wish to become Americans. It's not a "hidden" secret. Most don't care about socialism v. capitalism, and just want a better life for their children, and the three things listed above.

Right now, many parts of Mexico is a horrible place to live. (I am of Mexican ethnic background, though born in the USA.) Compared to Mexico, American does offer a freedom from fear. And Mexicans do work hard to own their own home. For those who do, there is a freedom from want and an achievement of the American Dream.

This dream deserves to be shared by all people through socialism, so some of us keep hoping for it. But that's not to say that many people don't achieve these three things in America, where they couldn't do so in Mexico.
