Hey,
I'm looking to have a read into basic economics just so I can get a grasp of what it's all about. I read and hear about how a country's economy is being affected by this, that and the other, but what I don't get is how the exchange of money between individuals affects the country as a whole (other than taxes).
I'm not looking for anything particularly left- or right-wing as yet, but just an outline of how stuff works. Are there and good sites or study groups happening at the moment?
Cheers!

Some people here will tell you that you don't need to "learn bourgeois economics" but I think that's wrong.
I would suggest checking out the reference writers section on Marxists.org and scrolling down to Political Economy. (http://www.marxists.org/reference/index.htm) It's got some stuff by Smith, Malthus, Keynes, etc. Then afterwards you can read some Marxian economics to balance it out.
Hope I helped.

And I would check out some criticisms of neo-classical economics from an ecological standpoint as well. 'Modern', i.e. neo-classical theories, ignore the environment as a source of value.

I recommend you look into Steve Keen's book, Debunking economics, it is great.
