I just saw the film Amazing Grace last night. It's about William Wilberforce, a British MP, who championed the abolition of the slave trade. It's sentimental, but it also talks about a lot of history which is ignored.

I was also interested to learn that the song was written by a reformed slave trader, John Newton. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Newton) Anyone else seen it?

I think it is worth seeing. It's flawed as a film, and very limited in its portrayal of resistance to slavery, but it brings some of the horror of slavery and moral fervour of its opponent to life. There are particularly strong scenes and images which I won't spoil.

Plus I can't keep the song out of my head.
