Uhmm so yea.
There is this guy who works at safeway, couldnt be more then 20-24 years old.
Once he helped me find the cookies.
BUT! Anyway! I saw him come into Timmies one night I was working and he was with a group of gothic/alternativly dressed friends and has on this WHOPPING huge
confederate flag belt (Which he displays with pride, tucking his shirt in behind it so tha tis shows). He also has a shaved head and has big black boots.
He hasnt worn anything millitary yet but he wears saggy jeans and white t-shirts most of the time.
Chould he be a neocon or nazi or anything? I think he is but I am not quite sure.

I live in Victoria, BC, Canada. Victoria is a city. No rednecks here.. mostly asian students, liberals and tourists..
I have never, and I mean NEVER seen a nazi or anything. But then again I havnt been to frightned till recently. I know there is an active male chauvanist group here... I know a place where it would be most obvious they are there.. And my SHARP friend told me where to avoid.... .

That flag is worn by apolitical people as well as racists.
So its hard to tell.
A "rebel' flag alone is not enough evidence that the cookie guy is a nazi.

Yea don't assume but seriously if you wanna find out for real just outright ask him. If is he a fascist then you know if not then it clears up confusion.
RNK
22nd March 2007, 15:13
Ask him about the confederacy belt. just out of curiosity. if you ask him straight up, "hey, are you a fash?" he might get wise.
Hah, a fash get wise? Well, it's possible. I suppose. Theoretically.
Anyway, try not to make it obvious you're asking for political reasons. Else you might get in trouble.
Ihavenoidea
22nd March 2007, 15:45
Or perhaps instead of outright asking I should just say sumthin like "Hey, where did you get that belt?" or someshit like, "Cool belt, whats it mean?" And that will prolly let him open right up enough for me to tell....
But I dunno... Asking him straight up might either offend him if he is apollitical or make him wonder why I am calling him a 'fash'.... unless they use that termonology to each other...

its weird that someone would be wearing a confederate flag up in canada. i've seen them in the northern united states, but never in another country. i dont see why someone in canada would be wearing a confederate belt unless they knew exactly what it meant. here in the south lots of people where them as symbols of "southern pride", but i wouldnt expect to find that in canada unless he was originally from the south. to find out if he's a fascist, just express interest in his belt, but sound totally innocent. if he tells you anything about "honoring his heritage" or something like that, he's almost certainly a fash.

yeah most definatly. I thought it stange too.. especially in such an ethnic, young, liberal city.
But I will investigate with the investigation and the much sneakyness of me!!
I will update when I find out... And dont worry, seeing him at work, making an aline at the till to take his order(Xtra large black with 4 sugar and a boston cream (an sometimes he buys all of his friends things, when they are with him)!!!! *his order*) and speakin up about his belt is compleatly innocent. lol.

No.
The shaven head or "skinhead" is meaningless, it's a type of music, Skinhead music, is similar to reggae and was started by afro-carribeans. As you probably know if you have a SHARP friend.
Jackboots, are the same.
And the confederate flag is associated with punk music, without any obvious political overtones. Even "Punx Not Red" is often used by a-political punks.
So, I don't think theres any reason to jump to conclusions. Ask him is he likes Skrewdriver or something.

not in north america, especially the united states. here th confederate flag is a symbol of "southern heritage" (according to those who display them), but more often than not are symbols of racist sympathies disguised as "heritage". i have never seen the confederate flag used in a punk context in north america, its always been in a racial or seccesionist context.

Not at all. Not only does it have very large political overtones, but I have never seen or heard of it being associated with punk culture, at least in America. Here it is a symbol or either Southern pride or racism or a combination of the two.

Well, ok, in the UK is commonly used with no political meaning.

Love Underground, I assume it is used in the UK as the swastika was used by bands such as the Sex Pistols and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Just a kind of shock tactic or perhaps for no reason at all.
My guess is he probably doesn't know what it means, he just thinks it looks cool. Kinda like those kids who wear the Che shirts but have no idea who he is/what he did when you ask about it.
If you really want to know I'd casually say something like "Hey cool belt, what does it mean?"

He was not wearing th belt. But after looking at victoria's archives and seeing how many attacks there are from neo-nazi groups and male chauvanist groups (there is a huge male chauvanist group here ;-;) I wouldnt put my guard down. He may not be a fash, but I should keep my eyes open. lol.. Especially that the men of god (as those chauvanists call themselves) are starting to get very active and rowdy....

I once watched a band play because the guitarist used to go to my school. They were a kind of metal band and the lead singer had lots of long hair and a confederate flag tied to his mic stand, and this is in the UK! I don't think he's particularly fascist though. Maybe this guy you have seen is not fascist but the flag is just a metal icon?

is this ironic? I hope so because thats the worst bit of anti-communist propagand iv ever seen. What an idiot.
And as for the goth connection, some goths start off goth then move on to satanism then to Hitler (who many see as the antichrist) then to outright fascism. I always give the goths a wide berth unless i know them. They could be anything.

Well, your probably right, I have seen confederate flags around my town too, but they are usually displayed by dumbass rednecks, of which we have plenty. Fuck, I remember being at a feild party once where I heard a group of hicks saying "Whats that fucking nigger doing here" when a black guy showed up. I was too high and scared to do anything but split the rest of my joint with the guy they were threatening. It can be extremely scary redneck here, but Ive never seen a skinhead or neonazi or anything. Hi! Rural Alberta here!
Fascists give me an unpleasant feeling in my stomach. And they stole a perfectly peaceful symbol from the bhuddists and wrecked it (damn Nazis!). Unfortunately, I sit next to a friggin' neo-Nazi in training in chem class. And he likes me. He seems to be attracted to people he hates/who hate him, so this is understandable, but, seriously, I want to hurt him some times. Especially when he makes fun of poor people/Jews/Blacks/Asians/the mentally ill/blue-collar types/the third world. Particularly when he makes the jokes to me.
I'm pretty sure most goths aren't all going to be Nazis, though. Likewise, not all Nazis are goths. And not all people wearing rebel flags know what the hell is wrong with it, unfortunately.
By the way...best test for a Nazi: see how he draws his swastikas. If he gets it wrong he's not a real Nazi. If he draws if right and then heils....run!

I saw a completely blatant Nazi when I was driving with a friend of mine last night. I was driving past a gas station and my friend was like, "whoa, look at that nazi," and there was this skinhead with a red sweat shirt with a big swastika over a white circle on the front. So I turned and went back because we had an "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx" CD playing and we were going to drive in the parking lot and blast hip hop music at him and maybe yell anti-nazi things at him but then I followed the wrong car and then when we went back a second time he was gone :( .

I've sometimes seen the confederate flag worn by metallers and members of the biker fraternity (and I'm from the UK). I wouldnt start getting suspicious unless he started coming off with racist language or brandishing swastika tats... hes probably apolitical.

31st May 2007, 17:14
Does it matter? If he is what are you going to do about it? Face it people, there are facists out there, as much as we may hate the idea. And Facism is a valid political ideology until it is acted upon. My name, Fashbash, refers primarily to the civilised ideological deconstruction of the facist ideal, only secondarily does it refer to physically removing the hateful scum from our streets. Facism as an extreme ideology attracts angry young people, just as Socialism does. In any organisation there are going to be immature, ignorant kids who follow a certain flag because they are looking for an identity, not because they agree with it. Just look at this website, see how many banal, crass arguments spring up, from people who don't really know what they're talking about.
If he starts expressing racist attitudes in such a way that it causes other distress, then you would be justified in physically assaulting him, but you can't do anything just because he calls himself a nazi or whatever. Besides, how can you tell how someone thinks just by the way they look? I deliberately have had a skinhead haircut, I tend to wear heavy steel toecapped boots, skinny jeans and a white t-shirt, does that make me a facist? No. It's just how I choose to dress, and that is totally separate from anything else.
ChickenJoe

ummm....yeah he might just be wearing it because its "cool" I live in the south and I worked with this girl who had a confederate flag all over her car and room and always talked about southern pride and crap....but she had no clue which side Robert E. Lee fought for in the civil war....now if it was a heritage thng she might have known the answer to that.....so who knows it may just be a fad.

One of my closest friends used to be a Nazi for precisely this reason. I managed to talk him out of it though. He spent a few months as a communist before deciding to go apolitical.
