I wasn't sure whether to put this in learning or politics, I decided learning...

I really don't know much about modern day Laos and Vietnam, I'd be greatful if anyone here could tell me about the current situation... I'm not expecting anything that astounding, I'm just curious as to whether they've opened up their markets like China or if they've maintained some sort of relatively progressive inherent ideology.

Yeah, vietnam, like China, adopted an export-driven economy and has recently opened itself to western capital. There are lots of recent news stories about maritime agreements, market openings, etc:

With the death of the original revolutionaries, Vietnam like China before it is now opening its economy to various market reforms and re-opening trade relations with the US and other capitalist nations.

Laos, has been on a similar path since the 80's however due to a poor economy and inadequate infrastructure, has been unable to develop to the degree that its neighbor Vietnam has.
