I just found out the other day that there is (or was, not sure) a rugby team in London England (I think) called the "Irish". That is also Notre Dame's mascot, the Fighting Irish. There are still teams with Native American themed names, but this is a race issue and I'm talking nationality. So if British and American teams can be Irish themed, then why can't they be the Jihad as well? Why not put a team here in Richmond and call them the Slavs? In America, or my area of it at least, Irish people are known for being good fighters and drinkers. So why can't we name a team the Germans since, in the opinion of many idiots in my area, they "like war"? Let's mix things up, put a team in DC and call them the Rebels and a team in Richmond and call them the Yankees. Basically, nationality themed sports teams are, in my opinion, offensive unless they're in their respective countries (Vancouver Canucks for example). What do you all think?

London Irish are nicknamed 'the exiles' aswell. Although there are also London Scottish. It goes back to the days when they had nothing but Irish/Scottish players. Not that this is a good thing.

Does that mean you are opposed to the Fightin' Whiteys too?

Yes. No race or nationality themed names, unless the team with the nationality themed name is in its respective country. Now, if for example a team was called "The Knights" or "Gladiators" and weren't in Europe it would be okay because they aren't nationality themed, but if they were the "British" or "Italians" that would be different.

There is a big difference here in how these teems came to their respective names.

The Notre Dame College (American) Football teem called the “Fighting Irish” or just “Irish” is thus named due to it being a catholic school.

In Scotland, teems like the Glasgow Celtic Football Club, and Edinburgh Hibernians, were formed during a time when the Irish Catholics were excluded from playing on teems like Glasgow Rangers. I’m not sure about the London rugby teem named Irish, yet I imagine it has similar origins.

This is far different than ethnic based teems in the United States such as “Washington Redskins” or in baseball, “Atlanta Braves.” No native American had a say, nor was able to play in those teems when the names had been chosen.

It’s like, take for example, some of the names of “Negro League” baseball teems, back in the day when minorities were excluded from playing. In New York there was “The New York Cubans.” Which had been named due to them signing on a large number of Hispanics, who were equally excluded from major league baseball.

If a bunch of white guys named their own teem that, it would be pretty fucked up.
