This week was the 2-year anniversery of the sturggle by Israeli Anarchists against the Seperation Barrier (aka Apartheid Wall). Their regular protest this friday had around 1,000 people attending and was celebreated by the police giving them tear gas, rubber bullets, verbal abuse and physical assaults. Every friday the group organises a protest in the Palestinian village of Bilin which is heavily affected by the Seperation Barrier.
The group which is at the centre of these protests is called Anarchists Against the Wall. They number about 150 hardcore activists with other Israelis, locals and internationals joining in the protests. Their focus is against the Government's Seperation Barrier but this is just a part of their total anti-occupation/anti-capitalist agenda which they stand for.
The Anarchists have been the most brave and most active oppenents in Israel against the Occupation and they have often been talked about in the mainstream media. In the last few years of protesting four memebers of the group have been shot by the Israeli police. All four members were Jewish yet despite this fact no Zionist gruops has ever critised the actions of the police.
However for the Anarchists they have said that for them the attention of the media should just not be primarily on them but rather on the suffering of the Palestinian refugees living in the Occupied territories. The daily life under occupation continues to cause a bad life for millions and few in Israel are willing to really combat this oppression.
Many in the Jewish/Israeli society have been unable to comprehend why these "Jews" have been going against their own government. But for the protesters themselves this is a easy question to answer. Anarchism which is a solid idea that goes back 150-years says that morality comes before nationialism and religion.10,000s of anarchists in the 19th century defended Jews when they were the victims of violence and now Jewish anarchists defend the Palestinians who are the victimes of violence. Although unfortunatley the Anarcvhists never get a chance to say what they believe to the general public but rather the general public are just fed (via a hostile media) what the Anarchsits beileve.
Despite all the negativity their struggle goes on without any intension of ending. Many of the activists are very knowledgeable about human history. For them they say that slavery ended, colonisation of Africa ended and many more forms of the oppression ended. There is no doubt that the oppression against the Palestinians will not last for ever and the Anarchists Agtainst the Wall are trying to make this oppression end as soon as possible. http://www.left-wing.net/news/bilin.htm
