Hello,

For university, i need to write a small essay on workers/proletariat and art.
It's a small essay (less then 3000 words) But since i'm at home on the toppic (this is part of a learning block based around marx) i wanna take it a little widers and have a claim like this:

Art about, for & by the workers was functional in the past, and we should start it again in the present.

Anybody has some good input on this ?

Links to sites of
soviet realism..
Art made by workers..
Art made for workers..
Art made about work..

I'm planning to include stuff like soviet realism, but also poems of neruda, punk, ect.. very wide.

Any feedback is welcome :)

(deadline: sunday)

Working-class artwork is not necessarily Marxist.
LS Lowry used to draw pictures of the misery of Industrial Manchester. I was watching the Culture show ages ago on BBC2 and they had a slot about an C18 artist who often drew about horses and all that feudal sorta shit, but they mentioned about him drawing a kind of Dignity of labour.
But maybe I'm too late.
And are you from Norwich or do you have bad grammar? (an university) yor aaa' ooniversi'eeeee, moy lerrrrv? Ow yooz enjoyin thaaaaaa'?

The wikipedia article on Socialist Realism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_realism) is pretty good, with some good examples of soviet art, particularly of ordinary life in the soviet union, though of course some were used for propaganda purposes and they can't always be trusted as a realistic interpretation.

Also, here's a fairly poor article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_realism) on 'Social Realism' which is art that depicts working class life, but I'm sure there are plenty of other sites dedicated to Social Realism if you search.

Another site (http://www.huntfor.com/arthistory/C20th/socrealism.htm) that briefly describes social realism, then lists some artists, and then some Kadinsky examples.

A great site for Ukrainian Socialist Realism (http://www.ukraineart.com/artinfo.htm) art from 1949 to 1991.

Also, you might want to look at some Ben Shahn paintings, he painted/photographed a lot of stuff in America that he saw in the depression in the 1930's.

Yeh I must say that any form of discrimination is heavily acted against on revleft except seemingly sneering at people who'se English isn't as good as your own. I have seen this time and time against and its frankly disgusting and highly reactionary. Beyond pointing for a form of intelectual snobbery it also points to a lack of undertanding of the fact that not everyone in the world speaks English as a first language  :o

PRC's English is in my view very good, especially since it isn't his first langauge. I wish I could speak another language that well. Good luck with your essay, it sound intesrting i'm sorry I can't give you any help with it, will you post it on revleft when it's finished?

I didn't really understand the trot comment could you please explain?
