Well, in some ways this is good but on the other it is bad. First of all it will cut down the number of flights but on the other hand, it will restrict air travel to the rich. Plus less flights means less jobs for people in that industry. I think before taxes like this are introduced they need to be carefully considered. An article on it can be found here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6438685.stm)

this presents yet another facet of the ever-present struggle between economy and environment. Carefull consideration will definately be necessary. The ecological damage of aviation takes place in more ways than one might think. In addition to the obvious air and noise pollution aircraft are often harmful to bird populations and airstrips often encroach on animal habitats. However, a staggering number of people are employed in the already turbulent aviation industry. The cost of fuel plays a large role in determining an airlines profit margin. But perhapes the answer doesnt actually lie in taxes, but in a rethinking of aircraft technolgy i.e bio diesel or solar power. A similar solution says the article was suggested by Virgin Atlantic airlines, though perhapes merely in an act of opportunist public relations. Governments always seem to want very simple band-aid solutions to environmental issues, when in reality the cause of climate change are complex and themselves constantly changing.
In any case, I'm sure tories everywhere enjoy the potential of this issue to sow division between environmentalists and proletarians, who by necessity must the align themselves for the advancement of both causes.
