I want to start a labor union for the students in my school. The thing is I don't know how to go about starting it. I can say, "Hey, I'm starting a student labor union to lighten the workload for students and teachers (since our state says they can't have unions). Do you want to join?". Of course I'll have more intelligent and indulging things to say than that, but basicaly that is what everyone will hear. Once we get people together, then I don't know exactly how to begin lightening our workload. I already have the idea of starting a proboards for the union. That way we don't need to have time consuming meetings unless absolutely necessary. Does anyone have any advice or ideas to help me?

Well.
It's similar to starting any sort of group. You need to establish the mechanics first. Who will facilltiate meetings, who will be the treasurer. Or at least, how will these positions interact? will they be democratically acountable? will they be ellected?

Then you need some aims and principals.

Once you've doen that, produce a poster, flyer, and advertise a meeting. See how many people turn up and g from there.

Thats the basic process, it's piss easy really. If you need help with teh specifics, feel free to come back here and ask I'll see what I can do to help.

Well, I plan on having all the members vote on the course of action and the actions that we take. We all function as one unit. We'll suggest problems and work on them one or two at a time. I will be the "President", but mostly all I do that is different than any other member is come up with meetings (if needed), start the forum, and represent the union when speaking with other parties. The whole purpose of starting the proboards forum is to eliminate the need for time consuming meetings since we're all being worked to death. When I leave (graduate) I will nominate 1 person and all the other members will nominate one person if they want, but they can't nominate themselves. The maximum number of nominees allowed is equivalent to half the number of the union members. Everyone will vote, and the rest is self-explainitory. Mostly, we all come up with plans and vote online since it is quicker.
