I was wondering what everyone's perspectives on the Friends of Durruti and Durruti himself are? I've just discovered his writings and those of the F of D and I was wondering if people consider them useful templates for anarchism in today's society?
Also, do you think any of their ideas and methods could be adapted for today's society? As I live in Britain, I was wondering if anyone from the Uk could comment on the extent to which their ideas could be applied to the Uk and how to go about doing so?
Cheers,

I've always had massive respect for Durruti and the FoD and read everything I could get my hands on about them. They were heroic class warriors.
Tbh, though, I don't see them as a template for modern anarchism. Although they didn't formally abandon anarchism and certainly arose in that movement, their program calling for a junta to repress counter-revolutionaries obviously would place them outside of anarchism.
It doesn't matter what label you call yourself though- anarchist, marxist, anti-imperialist, etc but what class interest you defend.

There is actually a study group going on right now about the FoD.

As for the ideas themselves, they defenitly infuence most of the growing trends of anarchism worldwide.
The Idea of the revolutionary junta, was to be limited exclusively to the millitias during a revolutionary period, so not at all outside the realm of anarchist vision for a new society.
Durruti himself is contraversial figure among anarchists. He is looked to by many as a straight ahead supporter of anarchist ideas at a time when some of the burocrats in the CNT were wavering. On the other and his positions around womens liberation, particularly around prostitutes at the time were, extreemly patronising and fairly reactionary. In he whole I think his early death was a huge blow for the chance of anarchist succeses in Spain.
TheAnarkismo (http://anarkismo.net) site represents the moden current of anarchism who take the FoD as one of our historical influences if your interested in checking it out.
