O'Hara in call for removal of MI5
[Published: Friday 2, March 2007 - 14:19]

Independent Assembly candidate for Foyle Peggy O'Hara has called for the removal of MI5 from Ireland.

Mrs O'Hara accused the other parties standing in the constituency of being quite content to have MI5 establish a new headquarters in Bangor "as long as they are 'separate' from 'civil' policing".

She added: "It is my view that in the six counties there is no such thing as civil policing.

"The reality of the situation is that MI5 will direct the PSNI to arrest those who they deem to be a threat to the six-county state."

Ms O'Hara claimed Sinn Fein's argument that they have secured a separation between the PSNI and MI5 was a non-argument because MI5, "even in England, never had a role in 'civil' policing".

She said: "The PSNI will be answerable to MI5 and will actually run arrest operations because at the end of the day MI5 have no powers of arrest.

"MI5 is accountable to no-one in the six counties."
