Recentlyin Quebec, a Hasidic Jew male (essentially the Jewish equivalent to the Christian lunatics who dominate political life in places like Lebanon and Alabama) refused to allow a female inspector to invigilate his driving test, a request that the Quebec government accommodated. Prominent Canadian scholar and Canadian Islamic Congress President Mohamed Elmasry welcomed this decision, suggesting that this decision was a sound and even went further, insisting that the government should provide male driving inspectors if a sufficient number of people demand it.
Most lamentably, there was no uproar from her union or from the left-leaning factions of Quebecois civil society (generally known for being extremely feminist and anti-clerical) and no demand that the government do the sensible thing and make it clear that the rights of women must never be trumped by the reactionary moral hygiene of religious fundamentalists, especially in light of the repression that the Abrahamic worldviews as a whole imposes on women. I don't give a damn what you call deity, what you call sacred, what archaic text you attempt to impose on the rest of us, and what insanity you believe. Civil liberties, scientific truths, and egalitarianism must never be sacrificed to accommodate these twits. (But then again, Jean Charest knows that Hasidic Jews amost unanimously vote Liberal while feminists are much more likely to favour the sovereigntist and (nominally) social democratic Parti Quebecois or the far-left feminist party Quebec Solidaire. Charest's a Tory asshat and used to be Mulroney's righthand man. He only cares about money and political donations.)
