I and my fellow underage workers have recently been discriminated against at our workforce. The managers have an ageist mentality and boss us around. Now even though this is normal, my problem is that other workers have been able to boss us around as well. These other workers are allowed to boss us around and at times even call us childish names. Yesterday though,my friend told one of the workers to shut up and this guy then told the manager and he ended up getting in trouble. It is pure discrimination based on age.

The list of ails goes on but I wanted to know if I and my fellow underage workers could join a union or even create a union ourselves. I haven't been too successful finding out my rights as an underage worker in NJ. I'm thinking about even contacting the ACLU to clear this up but it would be great if you guys can tell me what I can do to protect myself.

I'm not sure, but I'd assume youhave near equal rights as the older workers.

Discrimination is not allowed, whether it is Race, Sex, a Disabillity, National origin, OR AGE. You have the right to complain but be careful since ur not under a union because they can fire you at anytime, no matter the reason unless its based on discrimination. I really can't find much information on whether or not a minor can creat a union, but here are some links that might help.

This place helped me fighting the school system, but I don't know about work for minors.

Some information for New Jersey Laws for employment.

If you're legally working, then you can join an union at your workplace. And as far as ageism laws go, they mainly cover the employment of senior workers.

Well I am in highschool, 18 years old and a full time worker, and we have created a union. Please see this thread (http://www.revleft.com/index.php?showtopic=63281).
