View Full Version : Heard of any multi-milionaires who gave it all up

FOREVER LEFT

I heard of only one--- Frederick Vanderbilt Field who wrote his memoirs From Right To Left

He joined the movement while in college. He said his father was a monstrous bigot.

"Looking over his relatives, he tells us it 'was quite evident that, take away the Rolls-Royces, the palatial mansions, the huge retinues and the enormous wealth, there is nothing to distinguish a Vanderbilt from anyone else.'''

It is just as impossible for a person from a rich family to declare himself into being a communist as it is for a person from a poor family to declare himself into being a capitalist.

Besides, a rich person wouldn't know communism if it jumped up and hit him. A rich person's guess about whether or not someone is a communist is just plain worthless.

Both of those things are quite possible.

Thts pretty fucked up. Communism is an intelectual thing. There is no spiritual bond amongst workers. Only their class unites them. There for not all workers think the same. Similarly not all ruch people think the same, there not being any spiritual link between rich people or rich people and their mones. Rich people can have opinions and even actions which are Communist in nature, while Workers can have actions (and often do) that are reactionary in nature. Communism is not some "Spirit". It is a set of ideas and concepts understandable by all regardless of class.

You made a huge mistake in logic there because "Capitalist" is a way of defining somone in relation to the means of production while a Communist is related to beleifs and ideas. Apples and clouds anyone?

There are quite a large amount of poor who think that free enterprise is their saviour, likewise there must be many rich who surmise that the world would be better off under communism.

Only name springing to my mind is Feltrinelli, who ran a very prestigious left-wing publishing house in Italy and went underground before blowing himself up when trying to bomb an electricity pylon in the 70s. If I recall correctly it was all down to failing to buy a decent watch to use as a timer. More info at http://www.granta.com/features/2001/11/belton (although quite a bit of the article is dodgy, the stuff on Feltrinelli is interesting)

Why does it seems that all of Floyce's posts are total bullshit? I would refute your points, but comrades before me have already done so. As for multi-millionaires who gave up all their wealth and joined the communist movement, I don't know of any, though I do know that a lot of relatively wealthy people gave up their wealth and power to join the communist movement (i.e. Che Guevara).

hear hear, if every working person was avowedly anti-capitalist then the world would be a very different place... It may be oxymoronic for a worker to be a capitalist but that's a whole other kettle of fish

I'm not sure of any multi-millionaires giving up their wealth, but during the Irish War of Independence I know that the IRA received a fair amount of backing from some wealthy landowners.

Errrm...Friedrich Engels. You may have heard of him. He is rather well known.

Also, I saw a film in a shop about an heiress of a media corp (I think her name was Patty Hearne) who was taken hostage by a left-wing activist group like the American Simbionese League and ends up fighting their corner.
And technically a worker cannot be a capitalist, as he is not in possession of capital.
Maybe FL wanted examples, rather than a train of off-slagging.

1. It was the Symbionese Liberation Army.
2. Patty Hearst was her name.
3. It is actually believed that she was brainwashed into fighting alongside them. She later on told of how she was locked in a closet during her time with them and periodically raped.

A poor person CAN be a Capatalist.

A Capatalist is anyone that makes money from the labour of others.

Take for example the Great Depression, there was alot of very poor shareholders back then or the American dream rags to riches tales. That poor person would of had to start investing their money at some stage while they were still poor/working class.

Class is only material, it does not stop someone born in to a more wealthy class to question society.
