"What follows is based on actual occurrences. Although much has been changed for rhetorical purposes, it must be regarded in its essense as fact. However, it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It's not very factual on motorcycles, either."

-From the Author's Note at the beginning of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig

I read Zen and the Art of Motorcyle Maintenance. Didn't do much for me.
At the end of the book the author tells how his son was killed, the thing that I hated most was he said something like. 'he was killed by two black men'
I mean WTF has the colour of their skin got to do with it?
He was killed by two men, what he said just makes him a racist in my view. Would he have said 'two white men' if they were white? No.

Zen flesh Zen Bones is the best zen book I've read. I highly recommend it over any pop culture new age crap that litters the book stores.

MJM,

Yes, that is extremely racist, and as you wrote, it does make you wonder if he would have written the color of caucasions who might have committed the crime.

It's interesting. When my uncle, aunt and I, rented the new version of the Exorcist, there was a lotof interviews with the actors of the film. They were saying that during the making of the flim, 9 people died. It was funny, the mother, I think, in the flim, said that a guy killed was a"young black nightwatcher. (Security Guard.) My uncle immediately said, "yeah and the hispanic janitor too!" Meaning that why did she need to say that he was black as if that made a difference?

My uncle poked fun that she had to name the color of a man in such a low job position as to point out that probably if there was a hispanic janitor, she probably would have mentioned his ethnicity too! lol!

For anyone who doesn't know, caucausoids don't have to be white, Arabs and Ethiopians are also caucausoids.

Blasphemy,
"What The Buddha Taught" explained it well, to me anyway (it also has excerpts from ancient text). Right now I'm reading "Buddhism: Plain and Simple" it seems good so far. Sorry I can't remember the authors. When they start talking about dukka, and all that good stuff, it may get a bit confusing (just hang in there).
There are also retreats you can go on (monastic or otherwise) very cool. Hope that I could be of some help.

If you don't mind me asking; are you thinking of becoming a Buddhist, or just reading up?
