What do you think about the contriversy in TX about the vaccine? Should it be mandatory or not?

It's mainly a campaign of the abstinence-only groups.

Should it be mandatory or not?
Cervical cancer is second most common cancer so it's probably best if such a policy would be implemented and thus made available to everyone. If not, they should at least strongly recommend girls and women to get the vaccine.

No, I don't think it should be mandatory. What I think should be done is that the vaccine be made free and easily attainable and STD education increased in the areas where STDs are most prevalent.

I did a project on this 3 days ago. It should be mandatory, as HPV, though generally harmless and undetected, infects at this very moment about 10% of the United States' population. The disease causing strains most often give very painful and disgusting genital warts, but cervical cancer is a great risk. Its not worth the risk to avoid this vaccine for any reason.

There's a controversy about the vaccine?

Only in Texas...

I mean, why oppose a vaccine that has proven to be extremely effective in clinical trials and could save thousands of lives and reduce incidence of an STI? Oh yeah- people shouldn't be having sex. Ugh.

Anyway, I don't think it should be mandatory (because yeah... forcing medical treatment on people isn't exactly ethically sound), but I think if it's available and free, with information and education accompanying it- I can see most reasonable people opting to be vaccinated.

Controversy as in a bunch of anti-vaccination societies and conservative religious groups oppose it.

It's the vaccine would be mandatory for girls at very young ages, this is what gets the abstinence groups upset. Anticipating (or promoting as they call it) sexual activity at too young of ages.

If you make optional, you're letting the fundies fuck their kids over. Denying your kids a vaccine for religious reasons is as bad as denying them a blood transfusion like those rotten Jehovah's would do to their kids if given the option. (Note: Concerns about heavy metals, mercury, and autism are genuine reasons for parents to object, but I don't believe that's an issue for anything other than pertussis.)
