They seem like pure show to me - England claims to keep them for the same reason they didn't switch to the Euro - British pride and preservation of their values. Well ok that's not the only reason they didn't switch, but the royal family? Ol' Tony does most of the work...unless you call going onto British Television every now and then and saying something seemingly important; then receiving a million pounds for it of course.

moskitto,may correct me on this one,but I think the Queen still has the power to dissolve parliament.But it is highly unlikely she will use this power,as there would then have to be a referendum,and if she loses,then she must go.
This law may have been amended,so don't trust me on this one.
Also,Prince Phillip has the power to racially abuse people,and sneer at the poor and still make them pay him taxes.

No-one has mentioned the Queen mums estate all of £50 to £60 million pounds which has come from the people and won't be taxed when it all goes to the Queens. She owned over £16 million pounds of jewlery for gods sake, just allowed to take the peoples money and spend it that. Her money taxed could build a hospital. The Queen has to approve laws although in practice she is unlikely to refuse laws. Also British nationals have to be loyal and serve the crown. Note that on a British passport it doesn't say "Citizen" it says "Subject." This means that MPs have to be loyal to the crown or be fined and lose their seat, effectively a ban on true republicans.

Also it is illegal to discuss the monarchy in parliament.

The royal family suck. They cost us millions in taxes every year to look after them, and most of them don't do anything at all (i.e. the extended family.) The fact a million people showed up to cellebrate this weekend makes me feel radically naucious. Every time I criticise them someone tells me how great they are. I watched the queen going around in a carriage made of gold, while people die starving and homeless in the street. What double standards we seem to have. Since the queen is supported from our taxes, does that means she pays tax on tax effectively? Then it comes round again i presume, she pays tax. some of that goes back to her, then she pays tax on that...etc. etc.. lol I could be mistaken.
