The Something

So the theory is that the pendulum represents the majority of people in a nation and where they are politically. In French european history is would be seen as swinging to the left and you would have a revolution and upheaval then it would be too much and too radical and swing to the right and then the French people would have a monarchy once again and it would slowly start to swing back to the left again.
In America we see this in not so much radical terms as revolution but it most definatly exists. During the 60-70's during the hippie era and the anti-war sentiment was very high, this was a very left side swing of the political pendulum. The backlash of that was the swinging to the right with the election of Regean and George Bush Sr. Then it swayed the other way for a breif moment with Cliton then back with Bush jr. and so on.
My question is:Is the root of all this political change more rooted in a social theory that kids want to be the opposite of their parents? Also how would this theory relate in the rise of say communism in america? Could it be possible that the political pendulum would swing so far left it would lead to a revolution?
This alone brings me to another idea:How would the pendulum theory be present in communism? It's obvious people will still have different views on things I'm just curious as to how communism would allow for this "natural" thing to happen without seeming like a totaltarian state and not allow the pendulum to swing at least to some degree.
Ideas, comments? I've been reading the board for some time and this is my first post.
