Moscow refuses to allow Gay rights parade

MOSCOW - A top Moscow official repeated Wednesday that the city will not allow a gay rights parade, echoing the mayor's vocal criticism and saying that homosexuality is bad for your health, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.

"There is the hard line of the city authorities and the position of our main faith, the Russian Orthodox Church ... of the inadmissibility of such an event in Moscow," RIA-Novosti quoted the head of the city's international relations department, Georgy Muradov, as saying.

Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and city authorities barred gay rights activists from staging a parade last year, citing the threat of violence, but activists ignored the ban and were attacked by right-wing protesters and detained by police. Last month, Luzhkov vowed never to allow a gay rights parade, calling such events "satanic."

Russian gay activists pledged to hold a march in May.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone said last month that he strongly opposed a ban, and RIA-Novosti quoted Muradov as saying Luzhkov expects to face criticism over the issue at a Feb. 27-28 meeting with the mayors of London, Paris and Berlin.

In an attack on what he said was criticism from the Swedish ambassador, Muradov equated homosexuality with alcoholism and drew a comparison meant to suggest the ban was aimed to protect the heath and well-being of society.

"As you know, the sale of alcohol is restricted in many Scandinavian countries. Why not pose the question of removing the limits on alcohol in these countries, of holding a 'parade of alcoholics' in Sweden? They would answer: no, it's bad for one's health, it affects society's morals," RIA-Novosti quoted him as saying.

Muradov said he had "medical proof" that "this form of relations" is harmful to health, the agency reported.

..and attacking Anarchist/Antifa security. So nothings changed there then. :lol:

The only reports and first person accounts I&#39;ve heard have referred to "The communist party" and nothing else, so either that&#39;s the name or the media aren&#39;t specifying. The <s>Third positionists</s> communists on SovietEmpire and ThePhora defend these <s>Third positionists</s> communists actions.

There were people often referred to as communists that joined fascists, Putinistas, and religious lunatics of all sects in beating up on homosexuals.

I don&#39;t consider National Bolsheviks (Third Positionist) and Russian Communist Party (Stalinist) to be comrades though. For a revolution to truly succeed, they must join cappies and fundamentalists in the abyss.

I find it hard to believe that a leftist forum populated almost entirely by people from North American and Western Europe (At this point, the most pro-gay rights people in the world are found on the liberal, social democratic, and communist left in these part of the worlds, from what I understand) would have an anti-gay bias. You misunderstand the concept of self-determination.

Self-determination is about people being able to live their lives as they choose, that is without an outside force (such as a state) effectively governing how you choose to live your life.

Self-determination most commonly refers to the right of oppressed peoples to have control over their own lives, to manage their own resources - in essence, to not have someone else, the state, or a state body making decisions on their behalf; the term is commonly used in the context of Indigenous nations.

When self-determination is used in a communistic sense it is implicit that a person or groups right to self-determination does not entail that that person or group has any &#39;right&#39; to impinge upon the self-determination of others, that would be in contradiction to the notion of self-determination in the first place.

So to answer your question, NO.

Russian heterosexuals have no right to deny (violently or otherwise) queer peoples in russia the capacity to control their own lives, in the context of &#39;gay rights&#39;; to be afforded legal equality.

Opposing the legal equality of an oppressed group only contributes to this oppression, and is a road-block to meaningful self-determination.
