He died from tuberculosis. Apparently he got it when he was working on a project in a poor neighbourhood.
Personally, I think that he was a fine writer; 1984 was one of the reasons I became more of a socialist.

I absolutely loved 1984-it pretty much rekindled my love for writing, photography, and the arts.

Don't worry about it, some of us act like idiots sometimes
Just make sure u use the search button everytime, and if u still can't find anything, go ahead and post it
Everyone's a stickler about the search button because we've covered lots of subjects in the past, and its easier to find info looking through filtered old threads than it is to post and possibly get an incorrect or ambiguous answer
The search button is your friend.....

Orwell was a great writer. Although I personally thought animal farm was better than 1984.

Of all the big name authors he has to be my favorite. What he wrote was profound and full of messages but presented in a non-threatening manner so anyone could enjoy it.

1984 is my favorite book ever. Keep The Aspidistra Flying was also a very good book. Probably has the most humor out of Orwells works.

I think Orwell's 2 main works, 1984 and Animal Farm, are vastly over-rated. First of all Animal Farm, though I personally think it was a very good read (well written and such), didn't really provide any new astounding political insight, I mean for God's sake he could have just copied out a school textbook and changed the people to animals. I also think that 1984 is a terrible book. It's just so very dull and monotonous, I was hard-pressed to see it through to the end.

Agreed. Orwell is monotonous, derivitive and cliche riden. Don't bore yourself with the snore fest that is 1984, read something beautiful.

Well it is, that is the whole point. But you also must consider when the work was written. It was written during the second world war, before the majority of the revelations regarding Stalin came about.
As for 1984 being terrible, I rather suspect that you simply have terrible taste and a short attention span.

Perhaps, but there was still rampant fear of Stalinism in Europe at the time. Also Stalin's show trials would have at this time already been publicized (I think), and well, not all would have been fooled.

I'm terribly sorry, I just found the book to be intolerably bland, as if completely devoid of life or emotion. That doesn't make for very enthralling reading, whether it's the point of the story or not.

I finished it recently, its one of my favorite books. Um Keep the Aspidra flying is also a great book, and I might have to give that a re-read.

Homage To Catalonia and Down And Out are brilliant books, 1984 is handy is you need to make a fire.

why all the bashing of animal farm and 1984? You people don't seem to realize that not every book you read is going to be full of emotion and life. Orwell got his message across in both of those books, and i think he did it very well.
