What do you guys think of Niqabs?
Obviously they're a big part of Muslim tradition and must be respected but at the same time they really erect a barrier to communication. I mean how can you have a normal conversation with someone who is so concealed? You can't see expressions or anything. Talking to someone with shades on is bad enough!
I don't really know much about it, just interested in what you 'socialist intellectuals' have to say.

No, they're not a big part of muslim tradition (which hijabs are) they're anti-social displays of religious conservatism and sexual oppression of women. Anyone who wears a niqab in the west is being hostile and anyone who wears a niqab in a majority-muslim nation with no laws requiring it is implicitly promoting the oppression of other women. They don't need to be respected; political and social equality always trump tradition and culture. Screw the fundies and their oppressive culture.

must be respected
A person's right to wear one should be respected, but we should not encourage them to be worn because, like TC said, they are symbols of women's oppression.

Symbols of opression.
The muslims hide behind religion like rats... Sad part is.. these women are so indoctrinated that they thin kthey are doing it along with their will.. When it is nothing but out of subconcious fear and indoctrination.
I am happy the dutch banned the Burqa. Great move.
These women ask what they want to wear them, it is sad really..
Someone should Watch Submission by Theo Van Gogh on Google video.. It is very good. About the opression of women in islam

I'm not disagreeing with you that Islam has a history of women's oppression, but don't you think it's a little, for lack of a better term, authoritarian for the government to restrict what adults can wear?

I think that with indoctrination its compleatly differant.
They are indoctrinated into wearing that. The people are nothing but a society of subliminal messages.
Keeping the indoctrinated from getting out of control with their forced-physhosis is compleatly differant then just controling them.
i hope this makes sence.

Than shouldn't feminism and similar ideologies be spread so the women can "break out of their indoctrination" as opposed to just having the government illegalize it which will do nothing to help our cause other than put a mask over women's oppression?

^ exactly what I am talking about.
In countries like Iran, afganistand , etc... Women have to and they wil get arrested and beaten if they dont.
The Islamic religion says that Rightious and holy women are obidiant to men (I can quote the quaran on that one). And that women who are true beleivers in 'allah' will carry modesty with them and keep their hair covered and bussom wrapped as to not provoke lust in men.
A woman could be stoned to death in Afganistan for doing something like that.
I have quotes from the quoran that say so.. Everything I say is true. So these women think "If I am not a slave to my husband and d o not wear my veil then 'allah' will not love me and I am not a muslim"
Makes sence actually... Too bad everything that they think is a load of bs.

Good site to prove me right.
I will say it again, it makes sence that women of the islam faith want to protect their religion and do whatever the koran and hadith tells them to be a god-fearing woman. But all the things that tell them so in the Koran are are to opress and silence. Only of course, one was to speak out against islam.. then they can ***** all they want.
