Looks like they're stepping up the rhetoric:

US Accuses Iran (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6351257.stm)

When they start blaming Iran for killing "170 US troops" it seems to me like they're trying to soften the public for an invasion. I haven't heard the US blame them for killing their own countrymen before.

Plus they don't even have proof (sounds familiar):
"US claims the bombs were smuggled from Iran cannot be independently verified."

And why the fuck were they speaking anonymously ("The US officials, speaking off camera on condition of anonymity"), so they can't be accused of spreading lies if they're found out to be wrong?

Obviously I have no idea if Iran are supplying bombs etc to Iraq but I certainly won't believe anonymous sources who are probably being directed to do this by their seniors. Before long many people will just assume that Iran is supplying bombs to Iraq just because they've been hearing it so many times, the source being irrelevent.

It's no secret that Iran is probably helping supply insurgents in Iraq, which makes this such a fucked situation. Sadly, if news like this keeps coming out, lies or not, some move WILL be made against Iran, with fairly disatrous consequences. I believe we're already in WWIII, and this would all but lock it in, especially if NK somehow gets involved.

It's interesting that i'm reading this on a source thats not to readily avalible to the american public (BBC). Bush wanting to go into Iran is no real secret but Bush would surley want more of this stuff to come out on major American networks.

Bush's problem right now (the thing that is preventing him from going to war with Iran) is that theres too much other things going on right now and a lot of attention is being paid as to whether the Democrats are gonna do shit about Iraq. Also the early presidential race is taking up the media time Bush would usually use to spread propaganda.

The whole nuclear development thing hasn't created the stir needed for war, so really little stuff like this worked over time with Iraq but unless the White house starts making some enormous allegations the war won't cross over into Iran.

I think the US would want Israel to ingite the war, then we could "come to Israel's aid", and be the "heroes".

Resistence to American hegemony is mounting (eg latin america, middle east) and it's bound to result in an invasion of Iran as they have fuelled the resistence movements in Southern Lebanon, Iraq etc and as a result leaves America in a very vunerable position. Although it would be unwise to give outright support to the resitence movements, all leftist should act in solidarity with them as it is a perfect time when imperialist power is dwindling to fight for a revolution. This however cannot be achieved whilst the resistence movements are linked to highly reactionary politics. Therefore, agitation, activism etc is needed to put across a revolutionary persepctive on the struggle and win the working class over.

"US claims the bombs were smuggled from Iran cannot be independently verified."
But who's going to verify it? Due to the technical knowledge involved, it would have to be another military so even an independent source like the UK or the Iraqi forces are simply going to back the US's accusations.

The weapons have to come from somewhere, if not from Iran then from Syria perhaps or off the international weapons market. However, since all weapons can be traced to its original maker, Iran probably does seem like the best bet. Though the US is most likely exaggerating Iran's influence, it's certainly not surprising that they're becoming more and more desperate on blaming outside factors as the turmoil in Iraq escalates.

Could this be an unofficial media 'response' to Iran's recent missile demonstration...?

I forget where I was reading it, but there was an article somewhere about how the US is going to bring Iran into the war just like we brought Vietnam into it. Something will happen, Iran will get blamed, we'll go to war, call it liberty and democracy, and then years later we'll all find out that it was all based on lies. The American People. Duped. Again.

Everything rests upon how the people will react to such an event. If they by and large rally 'round the First Family with a pocket full of shells, we can safely say that there is little hope for real progress in such an environemnt. But of they are decided that they've had enough of lies and war there could be massive changes in the USA.

Yep.

It's time for the media to start convincing gullible people that Iran is evil enough to merit being bombed back to the Stone Age.
