View Full Version : Reuniting the Australian Communist Party

I'm an australian student and im pretty pissed off with the politcal situation at the moment, it is an election year and politicians on both side of the politcal spectrum are, and will further lie through their teeth to get elected/re-elected, i for one don't want john howard back in power, but i think labour at the moment is showing very conservatative views, that may as well be liberal.

Back in the 40's 50's Aust. had a politcal communist part and menzie's tryed repeatly to ban it, it went through the processes and it was knocked on the head, they remained.

50 odd years later and i havn't found anything on an politcally acting Communist Party in Australia, and i was wondering if Aust./ anyone else in the world knows about the situation of the ACP. Because if it has been disbanded or even weak i think it is time that the leftist of Australia should come together and unite as a common front.

I am only a student with a couple of years left before i'm off to university, but i think we need to start building a critical mass in Australia and have a united front to make it a formidable politcal party, I know most Australian's would bauk at the word communism and i think it will be a progess but nothing will start if no one begins it.

I hope for some interesting ideas!

i got some ACP contacts for ya if you want.

I heard most youth members of the ACP are part of "Resistance" (united leftist front under the australian section of the ISC)

The CPA was dissolved in 1991.

The CPA (revived) exists, and was formed by the Socialist Party of Australia. It has a few hundred members, and some base in the unions. It considers itself "Marxist-Leninist".

The CPA (Marxist-Leninist) exists, and is "Maoist"/"Hoxhaist"/"Anti-Revisionist" depending on who you ask (though it does not label itself any of those). It's pretty small.

You also have the Democratic Socialist Perspective, which is a large part of Socialist Alliance.

Yeah i was revering to them, my mistake, it is indeed the CPA.

Lol at peoples CPA 'contacts', i cant imagine what info theyd be able to give you

Rage Against Right, if you want to get involved in local movements the absolute LAST thing you should be doin as a young revolutionary is joining the CPA, 'revived' or not., its a relic of a bygone era, absolutely nothing more.

However if you really feel an affinity for monolithic organisations, i would strongly suggest you join Resistance (the youth organisation of the Socialist Alliance), they're a little bit nicer than the Socialist Alternative (your other red option), but with just enough of the socialist rhetoric that appeals to you.

As CDL pointed out the 'ACP' doesnt exist, it's called the CPA, and the CPA really arent 'a part' of Resistance in any meaningful sense, as they dont play much of an active role in anything these days, nor would many if any of their surviving membership be eligible to join resistance because its a youth group, that disbars the vast majority of CPA members. The CPA used to have a youth group but that has been dead for a long time, nowdays they dont really have many young members at all. These days the vast majority of young 'marxists' join Resistance or Socialist Alternative ('the big 2'), the CPA has close to ZERO presence... (id say actually zero, but like 0.5 is still a bigger number than 0 if you catch my drift?)

Thanx for that i just didnt really know what was out there, I found out about the CPA during school, i didn't mean it exclusively because i know very little about it, but i'd like to be able to get involved with some young like minded individuals, the Resistance, which you mentioned sounds what i was looking for.

As a former member of resistance, i say check them out. I'm no longer very interested in their politics, but if you join the sydney group, you wont often be able to complain about the group being inactive.

I still regularly get invitations to join resistance at demo's and come to meetings and such, and my inbox still enjoys a good assualt of resistance/socialist alliance/green left messages daily.

Do not join straight away, make it clear that you're not really too knowledgeable about local politics and do not sign up as a member untill you're sure you want to be one, breaking away from the group is rather difficult, i found, perhaps that was just me though.

Goodluck with it anyway.

I found that too actually, and I don't even remember joining! Just going along to some protests and then all of a sudden I was getting daily calls from Resistance informing me of upcoming events and what I could do to help!! Hahah in the end, I just stopped answering the calls, and although I felt bad, they got the message.

apathy maybe

Don't feel bad about ignoring Resistance. While they do often do (relativity) good stuff, they also do a lot of stupid useless stuff.

Also, Rage against Right, see the Aus/NZ thread in introductions. I've tried to list some Australian organisations or groups that you could get involved in. And introduce yourself while you are at it.
