The Group of 8, came from the former Group of 7, it is an organization comprised of countries with the 7 top economies in the world, plus Russia (as a concession). Basically, its a chance for the world's wealthiest countries to get together and discuss economic policy, to ensure that they remain the world's wealthiest countries. However, they also discuss other issues also, such as terrorism and crime.

edit: they have annual "summits" the next one is scheduled in June in Heiligendamm, Germany.

The G8 Summit protests have in fact been of great political importance for the left because they have enabled a diverse range of ideological groups to group together in support of a single cause; this should be recognizd as a big achievement given the problem of sectarianism often associated with left wing politics. In addition, the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001 was marked by the death of an Anarchist protester, demonstrating that the state is fully willing to use violence against those that challenge the economic power of the ruling class.

It´s in some small village in northern Germany, Heiligendamm. The protests are taking place in Rostock, though, the biggest city near Heiligendamm.
