I'm brand new to the site, and this is my first post. I'm a senior in high school, and I was assigned a persuasive essay on any topic. I'm one of the two communists at my school. I've had a very hard time arguing with kids because most of them are just repeaters that say things they've heard from their parents or something.
The essay is supposed to be one thousand words, and for some reason I'm having a really hard time writing it. I'm trying to make it easy to read for people that don't know anything about communism. I want to focus on how communism has gotten to be such an evil word in American society and how it really isn't what you hear on TV. I want to persuade them to maybe think a little bit about it.
Anyway, like I said, I'm having some trouble writing this thing. Anybody have any suggestions?

first off, i think it is important that you explain to them that communism has never been practiced in any government before, and that countries such as russia were merely socialist, and had the means become the ends.
second, you should explain about the horrors of capitalism. start with stats about how 2% of the population on the planet control 50% of the wealth.
i'm sure you'll have no probelm with this essay.
i can't say, though, taht you'll be the most popular person after writing it.

I started out by saying that communism has never existed, and also gave the definition in my civics book
Communism is often called a collectivist ideology, which calls for the collective, or state, ownership of land and other productive property.
Communism is a stateless, classless society, but I'm not surprised that the definition in my American Government book is totally wrong.
Ah the horrors of capitalism, I'll have no problem writing about that one. Good, good.
I'm already not the most popular person, so I'm not too worried about how people will react

you will have to address the whole dictatorship angle at some point.
as for the rest i would just flip through the manifesto and "borrow" the good parts.

like,
Every attempted "communist" society has become a state bureaucracy, therefore not true communism etc.
and how communism is not destined to become a dictatorship like everyone says.
Yea I'm going to use a lot of manifesto quotes

always remember, your way of reasoning is correct, and if you present true, honest facts about the world and the economy, people will easily be able to see that capitalism is not the way to go.
also, you might try looking into the logic of the philosophers of the Frankfurt School

comrade.. MAKE SURE you stress what we mean by "abolishing private property" lots of people think we mean their houses, and their cars, bike and such thing as possessions.
Please make this clear. that term alone there scared me away before.. before I actually picked up a damn book and took some time to understand what that meant!

That used to scare me too. I'll say that there are two kinds of private property, personal stuff like bikes and cars AND the means of production. And then I'll explain what the means of production are.

If you want some statistics for your evils of Capitalism part, you could say that 18 million people die each year die from easily preventable poverty related causes, and that 11 million of them are children less than five years old.

Remember to state what Karl Marx meant by the "dictatorship of the proletariat", which is the antithesis to the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, where the working class as a whole holds power to prevent counterrevolution and eliminate class antagonisms.
I'll say that there are two kinds of private property, personal stuff like bikes and cars AND the means of production.
Watch it there. This is something that you really don't want to say. Say that communists advocate the abolition of private property because it is based on the exploitation of man by man, and that only 1/10 of the population own any private property. Personal stuff such as bikes does not qualify as private property, that is mere personal property
