Humans Blamed for Climate Change (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6321351.stm)
This cracked me up. About time the scientists caught up with the rest of us.

Most scientists have been warning for this in decades. Some of them found it more rational to try to discredit the global warming theory.
Humans are not responsible. The price system is.

Alexander Graham Bell, said the use of steam power, might have a green house effect on the world... so technically speaking these guys are 100 years behind...

It isn't just humans.

I think most of us realize that humans arnt the 100% reason why the problem has occured, but its a huge factor. Sure there is the every changing cycle of global climate throughout the existance of the planet and that we are currently heading into an age with increased heat..but that doesnt account for how RAPID the heat is coming about nor the amount of damage being done. Animals also play a part in the whole thing..but again they do not account for the whole problem themselves. Scientists have been saying that we caused global warming for quite awhiles now..but the fact that it took them until now to make a proper official statement is just pathetic.

The Earth's temperature has nowhere to go but up... we're in an ice age right now, after all. And anyway, one period of volcanic unrest will make humanity's addition to the atmosphere look like a puff of cigarette smoke.

I agree with you. You know climate has been changing over the last 100 million years + and there are periods of warming and cooling. This has much to do with fluctuations on the suns surface - tilt of the earth and geophysical activity too. Pollution aids the warming trend as well --- as we are already seeing.

An ice age? I think your poorly mistaken. To be in an ice age the ice sheets, glaciers, and shelves need to be "expanding"....the last one was 10,000years ago. We have definately been moving away from an ice age but that doesnt mean that it should happen this fast. Current climate trends show that the increase in temp is much faster then before and thus must be due to some other factor...with one being...Humans. Ice ages seem to have currently cycled recently about every 40,000 to 100,000years..we arnt even close yet to having one. Yes volcanic unrest could make things worse but so far it HASNT HAPPENED. We know that humans are doing something to cause this problem so we should do something to stop it. If a giant meteorite collided into the earth sudenly then again the temp would go up..does this mean we worry about giant meteorites colliding into the earth? not really. We know the current situation and the current causes so we should do something to about.

 It's actually possible that this warming period will push us into an actual ice age.

Right, there are other alternative theories such as the solar variance theory that try to explain what is occuring. The fact is that scientists are naturally skeptical and even this report shows that trait in that they haven't 100% supported anthropogenic global warming yet. Of course, this hesitancy is also further complicated by politics, etc.

There are still ice sheets in the northern and southern hemispheres, and thus we are still in an ice age. Historically, the earth has been a much warmed place and most likely will be again.

I'm not suggesting we do nothing, I am all for environmental protection, I just find the hysteria about global warming a bit boring and ignorant of historical reality.

Of course it'll get warmer but its the point that its moving more rapidly then ever before and is likely extremely dangerous for the current environment. Just because ice sheets exist doesn't mean its an ice age, i think they have to be expanding for it to be one (not definite).

I agree. The hysteria though is due to both historical ignorance and ignorance of the current way our world works. People are just beginning to realize that the current situation is a problem and so we run around like ants....as people become more and more informed we loose the historical ignorance and reflect back on history to help us understand the current situation and how to deal with it. What gets me is that scientists the ones with easy access to historical data and with the so called "knowledge" are still running around like ants.

Maybe, maybe not. Warmer temperatures have historically been a good thing for life, especially human life- check out the Medieval Warm Period.

The common usage is when they are expanding but I think technically any time they expand is considered an ice age.

You're right, the existance of the ice caps does mean we are in an ice age, technically anyway.
