The Australian prime minister has criticised a Sydney baptist church for erecting a sign declaring that "Jesus Loves Osama".

The slogan, a reference to Osama bin Laden, the al-Qa'eda leader, has provoked a storm of controversy across the country despite its apparently Christian message of forgiveness.

Small print at the bottom of the sign urges churchgoers to "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you", a quotation from Matthew 5:44.

A spokesman for the Central Baptist Church told the Australian Daily Telegraph that it was merely "sharing the gospel".

He said: "Osama is the head of terrorism. We are saying that Jesus Christ loves everyone in the world, even this man. ... All we are doing is sharing the gospel."

So Christians on this board, will you do what your messiah and scripture tells you to, and declare your love for Osama, Saddam Hussein and all other terrorists? Will you acknowledge that according to scripture Jesus loves them, possibly more than his non-prodigal sons? Or will you selectively pick and choose from your beliefs?

They selectively pick and choose from their beliefs, of course. I have yet to meet a single Christian who takes Jesus seriously when he says to resist not evil and to love thy enemies. Christians, like all other humans, have an innate drive to resist evil and to not love their enemies. And it's a damn good thing that they do. Can you imagine what the world would be like now if all the Christians in the Allied forces had decided to not resist Hitler's evil and to love him instead?

:P they kissed his ass until he attacked Poland :P they only attacked when Hitler attacked them...

I honestly think he is no worse than Bush (probably a good deal better)...

I think the military camo style on the sign is a tad unnecessary.

This is true, but the point is that eventually the fascist powers were crushed, and this would never have happened if all the anti-fascists had followed Jesus' horrible advice in the Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew 5:38-[email protected] KJV
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

You just don't talk to the right ones. Which I think is on purpose to feed your beliefe that religion is evil and stupid.

You people have no idea what the Bible says, which becomes more and more aparant every time I read the religious section.

I don't talk to the "right ones"? Well, who are the right ones to talk to? I'm not the one to say who is a Christian and who is not a Christian. Anybody who calls themselves Christian is Christian in my book. I know a lot of you Christians like to believe that only you and a select few who agree with you are the "real Christians", but as a non-Christian I cannot make that kind of judgment.

The Christians in my life do resist evil, they do hate their enemies, and when somebody hurts them they do not turn the other cheek. And I'm really really glad that they act in a reasonable way instead of just letting everybody get away with whatever evil deeds they can. If all Christians were to follow the Sermon on the Mount, giving up earthly justice systems in the hopes that their sky wizard will eventually punish the evil in the afterlife, then we would have murderers and rapists running around free until some Jews, atheists and Hindus came and put them in their place.

You people have no idea what the Bible says, which becomes more and more aparant every time I read the religious section.
I know what the Bible says, but unlike you, I don't just ignore the horrible parts that order us to kill gay people (Leviticus 20:13), to be obedient to our slavemasters (1 Peter 2:18), and to refuse to fight fascism (Matthew 5:39). Yeah, you can read and read until you find some good advice, but you're not being honest with yourself if you can't locate all the terribly unethical bits. I'm not saying there aren't some good bits to be found in the Bible, it's just that there's so much crap in there that it couldn't have possibly been written or heavily influenced by a perfectly moral being, so what's the point in believing the Bible then? Why should we continue to publish and give to our children a book which tells them it's okay to kill people who work on the Sabbath, sell their daughters into slavery, and turn the other cheek when Nazis are taking over the town?

I think you're selectively reading passages to feed your belief that religion is not ever evil or stupid.

This idea christians seem to have that Jesus was a pacifist and preached "peace, love and brotherhood" is ridiculous. After all wasn't it Jesus who said "I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword" to turn family members against one another, and that anyone who loves their family more then Jesus is not worthy of him? (Matthew 10:34-39)
Funny how they always forget the parts like this that contradict what they're preaching huh?

Yea, I looked that up myself, no where did he say to kill your family members... he said that he would creat srife and hatred for preaching his belief, no where did he say to hurt others, the sword was obviously a metaphor for destroying life as it is, defying the Romans and the Pharisees...

Jesus doesn't love Osama.

He just wants to get him into bed.
