I've been hearing about this. Basically, a person is "registered" to a certain political party in the United States. Is this true? Are all people in the US supposed to register to a certain party?

You don't have to register to a certain party in the U.S. but if you don't, you can't vote in primaries.

Registering for a party means that you are going to become a registered member of said party so that you can go to conventions, caucuses, committees, etc.

Nope, a large portion of the population isn't even registered to vote.

It depends if it's an open or closed primary.

As I understand it when you register to vote in America you either reister yourself to a particular party or mark yourself unaffiliated.

Yeah, that's correct.
