I'm guessing that this may come across to some as a relatively stupid question but I really do want to know the answer to it. Why is it that gay men are stereotyped as lisping their "s"s? Are lisps actually more common among gay men than straight men? Once again, this may seem like a stupid question but I really am wondering if there is any difference in the way that the tongue moves with gay men as opposed to straight men or if this is just a baseless stereotype. I'm wondering this because a lot of the gay guys that I know do have a lisp, and I don't know to many straight guys with one.

i think not all of them are lisping their "s"s.i have a gay friend and he's not lisping on any word.i think that lisping is because there's some problem with the nerve on their tongue.mostofly it occured by how oftenly their used drugs.i have a friend that use drugs oftenly and he wasn't lisp couple times ago and now he did.

You are arguing that a stereotype surrounding homosexuals is born of drug use?

No, you get lisps from birth. Babies that tend to drool excessive amounts do so because of their tongue tending to move forward. I drooled a very large amount, even for a baby, (and still do :)). That habit of the tongue moving forward continues on and turns into a lisp when you learn to speak. As a result of my tongue moving forward, I used to have a really bad lisp and still do to an extent on some words. It has nothing to do with drug usage, it just has to do with how your tongue moves. My question is just, is that form of tongue movement more common amoung homosexuals than it is amoung heteros.

It's a baseless stereotype, and from what I can tell it's used to portray gay men, as talking more like effeminate and such, than heterosexual males.
I don't lisp.

From my experience with gay men with lisps, they want to be more associated with feminine characteristics so they speak with a lisp. Again, that's what I've heard from the few homosexuals I know personally, I'm not sure that's the case on a wide scale.
there's also a wiki on this subject if anyone's interested. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_lisp)

It's a stereotype based on the claim that one can identify a gay person based on his speech.
And no, there is no scientific basis for this claim.

I think your probably right. It probably tends to happen according to the persons own personal likes and preference. I have seen homosexuals who seemed to stay with societies views of masculinity and others who try and personify a more feminine way of speaking, talking, and dressing. So what i'm tryin to say is maybe the homosexual who does tend to have a lisp may do this on purpose i'm guessing?
