I dont know if anybody here is that into folk music, i am because its a form of music thats close to the people. I have recently started to learn Woody Guthrie's music on my acoustic. I think that he has written some of the best songs in our musical protest arsenal (Ludlow Massacre, This Land Is Your Land etc.) I think that Woody was one of the most recognizable and vocal North American revolutionary socialists. I encourage anybody who hasent heard his music to listen to it and those who have to share their opinions about it.

And, not to steal this thread's thunder, but Arlo was kickass too. Not quite as cool as Woody, but close.

Yeah, I like Guthrie as well. Has anyone noticed Bob Dylan's pose on "The Times"? A total Guthrie pose.

Don't forget "1913 massacre." He was a great spreader of the word, like Pete Seeger.

I was actually listening to this one yesterday, it's good but can get a bit boring. Some songs are great though, so I'd recommend it.

Is there anything else I should pay attention to?

It's always we rambled, that river and I
All along your green valley, I will work till I die
My land I'll defend with my life if it be
cause my pastures of plenty must always be free

I heard about Woody Guthrie when I read about him in Dylan's autobiography. I thought anyone who Dylan looked up to so much must be a fuckin God! So I bought a best-of type thing and I was fuckin right too! One of the best socialist americans, second only to possibly Pete Seger in terms of socialist credentials. My favourite song of his is 'John Henry', but I prefer Seger's version, and Springsteen's cover.

Woody Guthrie rocks!! I have some of his CDs. Haven't heard any of Arlos stuff. Sad about how people confuse This Land is Your Land with patriotism, :( I downloaded a speech from Bob Dylan about Woody Guthrie, it is pretty cool.

I have a live version of it that I got from Lime Wire; but it leaves out the most important verse (as it often does :()

Actually I am a folk music fan to some degree.

I never really warmed up to Woody Gutherie himself, his performance of his songs. I seem to prefer various covers better.

One of the best cover compilations was a CD recorded "Live at La Zona Rosa", which apparently is a live music venue in Austin, TX. The songs where done by various local Austin muscians (unknowns). Really this CD opened up Woodys music for me. I liked the song Pretty Boy Flloyd...good sentiment in there.

Another superb version is the Scots political folksinger Dick Gaughan covering Ludlow Massacre, which he opens with the song band of a bhodran, one of those irish hand drums.

In it's entirety at that.

I, personally, like Pete Seeger more.........there's something about the bajo I like.

One of the best socialist americans, second only to possibly Pete Seger in terms of socialist credentials.

Woody was above Seeger as a socialist, Woody actually was working class and he was the one who taught Seeger the power of music as a political weapon. Seeger actually spent several years travelling with Woody around the country when he was in his early twenties.
