In the State of the Union address, Bush asked all Americans to plan to give at least 4,000 hours over the rest of their lives in volunteerism.
Now apart from the obvious similarity to Fidel and Che's requesting the workers of the revolution to work every Sunday for volunteer construction and agriculture, which was completely understandable for the building of a more advanced society that had a wider economic base, what is Bush's point?
I mean, everybody volunteering in a capitalist society means good salary foregone, and circular payment through the economy foregone.
In other words, working stiffs like me should let people do that work that I would volunteer to do and let them get paid for it.
Now as it happens I've put in way beyond my 4,000 hours working with battered women, and I plan on working releif efforts full time some time soon. But what is the point of volunteering time instead of money?
I mean, shouldn't Bush put a dollar figure on it? If he had asked every American to donate xx% of their income to their charities, that makes way more economic sense than volunteering. That way the grumpy tired folks like me can pay happy patient people to do the charity work.
Does this make sense? Should I go back to chatting about sex in the chit chat section?
