In the State of the Union address, Bush asked all Americans to plan to give at least 4,000 hours over the rest of their lives in volunteerism.

Now apart from the obvious similarity to Fidel and Che's requesting the workers of the revolution to work every Sunday for volunteer construction and agriculture, which was completely understandable for the building of a more advanced society that had a wider economic base, what is Bush's point?

I mean, everybody volunteering in a capitalist society means good salary foregone, and circular payment through the economy foregone.

In other words, working stiffs like me should let people do that work that I would volunteer to do and let them get paid for it.

Now as it happens I've put in way beyond my 4,000 hours working with battered women, and I plan on working releif efforts full time some time soon. But what is the point of volunteering time instead of money?

I mean, shouldn't Bush put a dollar figure on it? If he had asked every American to donate xx% of their income to their charities, that makes way more economic sense than volunteering. That way the grumpy tired folks like me can pay happy patient people to do the charity work.

Does this make sense? Should I go back to chatting about sex in the chit chat section?

The State Of Disunion Speech In A Nutshell:

"Yee Haw, people we're at war! We're kickin' ass! Hey people did I mention we're at war and we're kickin' ass?!?!?! Oh, yeah, there's all this bad stuff goin' on at home, and I have all these vague ideas of how to fix it, but I can't go into all that because we're at war and we're kickin's ass!!! Did I mention we're at war and we're kickin' ass!?!?!?!!"

Anyway, the State of the Union was a joke. Bush was an ass. And his whole 'commit yourself to each other' for 4000 hours was more a page out of Communist history than anything else.

Bush said what he said for a publicity stunt. He wants the IMAGE of being for communities, he want's the image that he's out there fighting for the common good. Maybe some poor sap with think of Bush as a volunteerism leader.

Has Bush himself volunteered 4000 hours?

No, I think not. Hypocrite. Ass.

I hate that little Shrub bastard.

He said that this next year will be a war year. And it will. The problem is, by the time his four years are up if he's at war people will be sick of it and vote him out, and if we're not at war he won't have spent very much time as a peace president. So he's preparing for America at peace by asking us to do all sorts of peace-time things. Instead of joining the army and shooting people, he wants a citizen or two to paint rainbows on the walls of orphanages.

Because he doesn't look like a war guy. Let's face it, his face is not intimidating. (He looks like a monkey if you ask me.) So no matter what happens he'll always try and slip a cuddly idea or two into any warmongering speeches. "Let's go kill some Afghanis. Volunteer at a homeless shelter. G-d bless America." You know.

I wonder how many hours he's spent drunk. That should be his proposal: For every hour you spend drunk, high or sexually involved with a farm animal, my fellow Texans, you should spend at least two hours contributing to the community.
