Schools in England should teach "core British values" alongside cultural diversity, a report will say.

A review of how schools teach citizenship and diversity found there was not enough emphasis on British identity and history.

The study, by Sir Keith Ajegbo, says pupils should be taught more about what binds them together.

Education Secretary Alan Johnson will say schools should "play a leading role in creating community cohesion".

He will say it will be compulsory for secondary school pupils up to the age of 16 to learn about shared values and life in the UK in their citizenship lessons.

British values

Ahead of the unveiling of the plans, Mr Johnson told BBC Radio 4's Today programme how he defined "Britishness".

"It involves the values that we hold very dear in Britain which is free speech, which is tolerance, which is respect for the rule of law," he said.

Sir Keith, a former head teacher of a London school and Home Office adviser, has concluded that pupils should be taught more about the history of Britain and about how British values of tolerance and respect developed.

He was asked to look at how the subject of "Citizenship" was being taught in schools. It became compulsory in England's secondary schools in 2002.

Last year schools inspectors Ofsted said the subject was taught badly in one in four schools in England.

Sir Keith's report, which was commissioned by the government, will say more needs to be done to engage white, particularly working-class pupils, with the issue of diversity.

It will say white pupils can feel disenfranchised as much as pupils from other ethnic backgrounds.

"Many indigenous white pupils have negative perceptions of their own identity," it will say.

"It makes no sense in our report to focus on minority ethnic pupils without trying to address and understand the issues for white pupils. It is these white pupils whose attitudes are overwhelmingly important in creating community cohesion.

"Nor is there any advantage in creating confidence in minority ethnic pupils if it leaves white pupils feeling disenfranchised and resentful."

Slavery

The compulsory lessons in shared values for secondary school pupils which will be confirmed by Mr Johnson will include history topics.

At the moment, history is optional after the age of 14. The historical lessons could include topics such as slavery and the movement towards votes for all.

Mr Johnson will say Britain is a nation built from and by people from other countries.

"I believe passionately that schools can and should play a leading role in creating greater community cohesion and combating ignorance of other countries, religions and cultures," he will say.

"By 2010 one in five pupils in our schools will be from an ethnic minority - this is a challenge but also an opportunity to instil a culture of understanding and tolerance at an early age.

"The values our children learn at school will shape the kind of country Britain becomes."

In a word: ridiculous.

The same thing goes down in the US
Immigrants are especially targetted and made to learn "what it is to be an American," especially when they become American citizens
They're often told to or are expected to reject many of their traditions and beliefs which are interpreted by nationalists as "unAmerican"
Not only that but they're also expected to speak "proper" and "clear" english by ppl who have a problem with different variations of the english language
its bullshit

What a load of shit. Not only is it a stupid waste of time to try to teach peoplee "britishness" (whatever the fuck that is) but it cuts into time for useful things. I know that in the position of school kids today I rather learn maths than "britishness". Although "british" lessons could become a doss lesson, because seriously what the fuck is "britishness"? It says on there 'free speech' which I guess it is to a certian degree, if you lend credence to this absurd theory that there is such a thing as britishness, but it also says on there 'tolerance' which is very different britishness to the one the BNP are peddling. FInally 'respect for rule of law', bollocks - that's just there so that the government can keep kids from doing illegal things. This seems to be presenting the "mustn't grumble" steryotpe of britian rather than the angry britian that seethes away today. Although that is what it all comes down to, a lesson into how to be a steryotype, they couldn't make it any more salient if they gave etiquiette and elocution lessons with it.

(Sorry for incoherency but this kind of shit pisses me off.)

We just had an assembly featuring a National Guard video. It was the most blatant subtle propaganda I've ever seen. All these dying imperialist powers like Japan, Britain and America are stepping up in-school propaganda lessons. Fascism isn't that far away for these countries.

**loveme4whoiam you should have posted the full article though...what you put is rather segmented and doesnt tell both sides of the argument. Also you added words that wernt even used in the article.**

for instance:

Alison Johnston, from the Professional Association of Teachers, said: "It would not be appropriate to promote an imperial British myth by teaching that values such as democracy, justice and fair play are exclusively British or implying that Britain is superior to other countries."

You missed this completely. Its good for us to know that not everyone is a nationalist and that the teachers themselves have a good fair view point on the whole subject.

Also:

It makes no sense in our report to focus on minority ethnic pupils without trying to address and understand the issues for white pupils. It is these white pupils whose attitudes are overwhelmingly important in creating community cohesion.

Where did you get this from? Only the last bit is even talked about in the article. Please dont post false information...its hard enough to disect the truth from the news without leftist baised getting in the way also. If I am wrong and this is from something else then please post that link and ill be more then happy to apologize.

anyways:

Im all down for british history to be taught (along with world history)....but not so called "british values". Anyways, tolerance is not a british value (as the teacher agrees). Take a look at recent british terror laws and the events surrounding them and you'll realize that Britian is moving away from "tolerance".

I agree with Tatanka Iyotank. Its scary how nationalism is becoming such a big deal for so many countries. I was shocked when i read that japan was going to require patriotism to be taught in schools; of all the people in the world they should know what happens when nationalism is instigated. America is already extremely nationalist...here they just prefer to call it Patriotism and pretend that its no big deal.

Beg your fucking pardon pal, I quoted the article as it was - it was changed after I quoted it. Why the hell would I misquote a news article? The fact that they changed part - "It makes no sense in our report to focus on minority ethnic pupils without trying to address and understand the issues for white pupils. It is these white pupils whose attitudes are overwhelmingly important in creating community cohesion" - shows a change in the way the BBC is reporting this story. The fact that you would think I would alter this is fucked up

Whoa whoa. I said I would apologize if I was wrong. Look all I was going on was the differance I saw between the article and the one you posted. BBC World News doesnt usually state when they edit an article or the date/time when they do. Once in awhile an article's quotes are posted here that are not 100% accurate.

Again: I apologize for my assumption and am sorry I made the mistake of assuming you would do something like that. :(

I have noticed a subtle hint of 'Americanism', ie. "Communism is unamerican", and am utterly sick of nationalism.

And loveme4whoiam Kia was just trying to politely get the whole story, no need to get upset.

Whenever the tin hat brigade throw out the old 'britishness' chestnut you just need to explain to them theres greater clash of culture cross-class than there is cross nationally. If by culture you mean how we live our lives then internationally most of the proletarian have to get up on a monday morning to do a job for the greater part theyd rather not have to. The beourgiouse dont have this problem, and they certainly dont participate in my habits and vice versa. You dont see me flying up and down the shires atop a horse in my jodphurs blowing a fucking trumpet while chasing a defenceless fox. :D

YOu hit the nail on the head. The whole question is which culture they're teaching. is it the culture of the working class, the history taht includes the levellers, the general strike, the international brigades, the lives of working people and their concerns, values etc or that of the propertied and privelaged in britain.
