I don't know if you've heard, but a large transporter ship has been wrecked off the coast of Cornwall in Devon, UK. While the crew are fine, the cargo has been washed up on a stretch of beach about twelve miles long. Local people have, as they have always done for hundreds of years, rushed down to the beach and salvaged as much of the cargo as they can- including car parts, wine, beer, electrical stuff etc. Now the police are telling them they can't do this.
On the news this morning some bigwig described the actions of the locals as 'Crass greed', and at the same time the Police are restricting entry to the beach 'to protect the public'. This strikes me as absolutely gros hypochrisy. What is 'crass greed' if not importing goods produced by workers from (i think) China, to sell for an abominal profit here?
What is the leftist view on 'Salvage'?
