Not someone I would take too seriously.

Even if something like this could happen, right-wing politicians in the US would probably hold it back for as long as possible.

I wouldn't be surprised if humans were wiped out within the next fifty to one hundred years anyway.

With the population growing at the rate that it is, I wonder what this would do to the world population.

That is when the "ethical suicide parlor" comes in.

It probably just means that the totally un-inhabited vast lands of the Montanas, Dakotas, Idahos, etc...will become populated. Obviously won't solve the problem, but should help.

<_< How many threads in this forum are dedicated to overpopulation with the general consensus being that OVERPOPULATION is not the issue, underproduction, inefficiency and poor distribution being hte main culprits?!?!?!

And also, its no coincidence that with increased life expectancy (western social democratic nations compared to that of the third world) birth rates decrease due to increased planning, increased levels of women in the workforce and professional fields.

If anything, this could allow us to maintain a nice, relativly static and sustainable population of increadibly skilled, intelligent and enlightend people.

I don't think that's entirely accurate. It seems that the more populated a place becomes, the lower the collected intelligence sinks. Without even mentioning the depletion of our worlds resources and the natural strain that would put on our planet, living to a thousand is really just not a moral move to make.

Nothing but the earth itself need last that long.

And what biological mechanism is this 'corelation' founded upon?

"Moral"? You're joking, right?

Seriously, though... With increased age it is likely that birth rates would correspondingly lower in the long term. Besides, if people overpopulate then the extra people will simply die off until equilibrium returns. With the use of technology, this capacity only increases.

Through technological means, it may even be possible to attain immortality that requires a minimum of biological resources, if any at all.

Nothing but the earth itself need last that long.
Why?

Mr Doom, completely agree with you ;) , can we get some actual biological or natural law foundations to your claims wanderer?

It seems that the more populated a place becomes, the lower the collected intelligence sinks.

I was referring to the corelation between age and intelligence of a person who isnt degrading with senility or old age. And why would population increase with increased life span? would people have more children over their life-spans? if so, why?

Well even if this is true, in this capitalist society only the rich will be able to afford these therapies that prolong life.

I guess under communism overpopulation will not be an issue, but if it does, then overpopulation will be because of other reasons than we know today. And I hope living to 1,000 will be like 50 - 70 years of active life and 950 - 930 years of living a pasive life as an elder.

EDIT: Ignore that last part, it seems you can choose at what age you want to live 'forever'.

consensual hallucination, maybe. that is NOT agreed upon, nor is it consistent with general scientific opinions.

Seems like it would be quite expensive and very time consuming to continually have to maintain and repair the human body. It also calls into question why anyone would want to live 1,000 years and go through this type of treatment continuously.

If everyone has a longevity of 1,000 years then we will definitely have a problem with population.

I would, and my opinion, is if have the ability to cure death, and be immortal why not? This is definately interesting, :D .

This kind of research is still a break through, and useful, because think of how it can be applied post-revolution.

it would make colonisation of space a lot easier.
but when i think of education cold shivers run down my spine imagining we would be in school untill we are like 100 years old.
perhaps a drivers license at 250

but it would be nice to life so long and just enjoy life with your family.
the things you would be able to do and see would be mindblowing.

well let's say that its like imagining that 5 couples live in a room 5x5metres and they get kids and their kids and kids and their kids get kids and .... so if we take it on a bigger picture it will make what the earth looks like if every person could live 1000 years and we are still talking about Spacng , not food or water or clothes or entertainment and other cultural complications

Hooray!! instead of working a shitty job for 60 years to provide for myself, I'll have to work a shitty job for 700 years. I'd probably have to kill myself after 400. <_<

Actually make that 421, I'd have to have a 420 birthday.

What's the point in trying to live for a thousand years, most people get bored after, like 80 years (assuming they are still sane and alive.). I'm not saying it's a bad idea but maybe we should aim lower - two or three hundred maybe.
