I'm watching this history channel presentation on Jim Jones and they keep saying he was a Socialist, but i dont see how he was a socialist at all. I think there just using the fact he claimed to be a socialist to slander socialism. Who was this man? and what are your views on him? Sorry if my post is incoherent its just so shocking and at the same time makes me annoyed they're slandering socialism.

I watched it to. They aren't slandering socialism at all. But It's true he did claim to be a socialist. But like you said he wasn't a one at all. He formed the People's temple. His sole basis was to create a Utopia free from Racism. It was suppost to be based upon quasi-communist principles.
In the end he ended up having 909 of his followers commit suicide *more like murdered* and then the coward had to have one of his followers shoot him, because he saw how his followers were being killed and he didn't want to go out like that. I believe he referred to it all as being "Revolutionary suicide"

Yeah, I've always been interested by Jim Jones and I, too, am watching the program on the history channel. He's actually from a town that's just north of mine.
Anyway, I soppose they consider him a socialist in part because he started his own town in South America and ran it under socialist ideals. He also claimed to be an incarnation of Lenin. Also said "...ought to be replaced by revolutionary struggle that would end only in victory (socialism and self determination) or revolutionary suicide (death)."
They were probably also confused by the name "The People's Temple" and that whole "racial equality" stuff.

From Wikipedia:
He gained respectability when he became an ordained minister in 1964 in the mainstream Christian denomination Disciples of Christ, which was later rescinded[citation needed]. The church was exceptional for its equal treatment of African Americans and many of them became members of the church. He started a struggle for racial equality and social justice, which he dubbed apostolic socialism. Jones authored a booklet, called "The Letter Killeth" pointing out what he felt were the contradictions, absurdities, and atrocities in the Bible, but the booklet also stated that the Bible contained great truths. He claimed to be an incarnation of Jesus, Akhenaten, Buddha, Lenin, and Father Divine and performed supposed miracle healings to attract new members. Members of Jones' church called Jones "Father" and believed that their movement was the solution to the problems of society and many did not distinguish Jones from the movement. The group gradually moved away from mainstream.
bolded by me. Just sounds like another godsucker who didn't look down on people of different color.

How is it that a guy obviously whacked out does'nt get murdered yet fred hampton does? He also took that "reveloutionary suicide" phrase from Huey P. Newton and distorted it horribly.

I think I saw the same program. Did the program also say he studied the works of other socialists, such as Marx?
But he DID have some socialistist and communist beliefs and did organize many programs such as soup kitchens and what not. The problem was that he was very paranoid and kind of one of those loners.

Oh man, I watched that shit too! Well, I was flipping back and forth between "When Metal Ruled the World" on VH1, and that, but still! They were playing a marathon... the one on Charles Manson was pretty interesting.
