We are far from the monopoly capitalism and the ultimate destruction of the capitalist mode of production describe in 'Capital'. The current world recession is not strong enough to last more than another 2 years. Thus, for the moment we must be eradicate economic determinism and develop Gramscian hegemonic relations with the working class.
Class struggle involves ideologies as much as it involves concrete political struggle. There are ideas that will make a revolution and there ideas that will break a revolutionary transformation from occuring.

The subordinated class that is the modern working class accepts ideas and values from the dominant group, that is today's capitalist bourgeoise, their economic and intellectual and moral domination.
The capitalist class have unconciously maintained their hegemonic dominance by securing the spontaneous consent of the working class through the development and maintence of political and ideological consensus. The universal 'human nature' and 'common sense' of a cultural 'universe' has been created, which has infact emerged out of the class struggle itself.

The question needs to be asked, can hegemony be only a strategy exclusively of the present dominant groupings ?

If the modern working class is to develop its own hegemony it must build up alliances. The workers must inite democratic sturrgles with its own conflict against capital so as to strengthen the popular collective will. This presupposes constand readjustmentment and tactical renegotiations continously. Consequently, we are in a 'war of position'.
