LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- An escalation in the war of words between New Line co-chairman Bob Shaye and "Lord of the Rings" filmmaker Peter Jackson appears to be nixing any possible reconciliation between the two -- or any chance that Jackson will direct the trilogy's prequel, "The Hobbit."

In an interview with the Sci Fi Channel news service Sci Fi Wire, Shaye said Jackson will never make another movie for the studio and said the filmmaker just wants more money.

"I don't care about Peter Jackson anymore," Shaye said. "He wants to have another $100 million or $50 million, whatever he's suing us for. He doesn't want to sit down and talk about it. He thinks that we owe him something after we've paid him over a quarter of a billion dollars. ... Cheers, Peter."

In response, Jackson issued a statement Tuesday that did not attack Shaye but aimed at clarifying his issue with New Line. Jackson said the lawsuit stems from the studio's refusal to account for financial anomalies that surfaced from a partial audit of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and that it has denied his repeated requests to audit "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King."

"Fundamentally, our legal action is about holding New Line to its contractual obligations and promises," Jackson said. "It is regrettable that Bob has chosen to make it personal. I have always had the highest respect and affection for Bob and other senior management at New Line and continue to do so."

Meh. It will be good to see who they get instead, hopefully with a really different style, I wouldn't want the Hobbit to be too similar to LOTR, though I hope it is good, it was the first Tolkein book I ever read.

So what? The quality of the movie declined drastically as the trilogy went along. Return of the King, while entertaining, was a pretty shit movie.

Always happens with trilogies of an epic nature, they cant see any way to top the earlier films except to fit more nasty goblins on screen at a time. Its like with the matrix where they just turned it more epic and more confusing in an attempt to top the first.

It's understandable that they want someone new as The Hobbit is quite different from the LOTR trilogy not only in terms of style but also in genre as it is more directed towards children and was written before Tolkien began to do serious work conceptualising the Arda world.

Thats strange because I thought they were all filmed contemporaneoulsy in a year and a half period.

indeed. i got the director's cut versions for all of them, and i think they're amazing. all 3 movies were filmed together too, so its not like they really could keep adding that much more stuff after the first ones were released. i think the final scene at the crack of doom was one of the first scenes filmed.

hopefully Weta Workshop will still do all the sets and props for the hobbit.

Yeah. I don't really care about them cashing in on the franchise even further. Hell, they might as well start making movies out of different chapters from the Silmarillion, that would keep things going for years! But then again, not many people will have the attention span to fit those stories into the timeline of the LotR trilogy. At least this keeps it simple: "This one. Was. BEFORE. LotR. Got it, dumbass?"

It's probably because Peter Jackson is busy with "Halo".

nope, he's producing it, and is apparently going to have a big hand in the making in it *cause, well, he's the producer*

but I heard they got delayed for some reason.

Return of the king without the cut scenes is not really nothing. :(

NEEEEEEEEERDS!!!! Am I the only one who realises that LOTR is SHIT???! Return was so cheesy that if you got natives from the towns of Stilton and Wensleydale to have a WWF style match, complete with the uber-cheesy storyline, and nobody was allowed to wash their feet or knobs a month beforehand, it still would be less cheesy than Return of the King.

You fucking philistines. Go and watch Pan's Labyrinth.

ED: o yea btw who gives a shit?
