View Full Version : Is it Racist?

Is it racist if someone of a particular race is only attracted to women, or men of that same particular race, or just another particular race and nothing else? I'm not talking about me or anyone I know, I'm just wondering out of curiosity.

Nope.

No it's not at all because it is just how your brain works, you can't help it. For a while, I was only attracted to black guys (I'm white).

Not at all, its a simple preference.
I prefer to date and eventually marry a Hispanic female.
I think all others are beautiful as well but its my preference for cultural reasons.

That's a difficult question to answer because naturally we don't know what that person is thinking when he/she chooses their mate
However, if a person exclusively dates another person from one race and loathes or looks down on all others based on ethnic, cultural, or physical traits, then I'd say they're either racist or damn near to it

Basically i enjoy my culture a lot and would like to stick to it.
I respect all others don't get me wrong, but i prefer to date someone of the same/similar culture as me.

This is a remarkably useless thread.
Clearly one has a political obligation to be attracted to every other human being on earth...

All kidding aside, what the hell is that???
You want to "stick" to "[your] culture"? Wow, can you spell racial seperatism?

Not at all, im all for racial mixing
But like i said
I PREFER to stick to Hispanic women.
You know like Salsa,Merengue,Reggaeton,Bachata ETC?
The Spanish language?
Get it? Thats what i mean, i find it easier to get around with a female with these same origins, its obvious that fastest one with these similarities is a Hispanic.

I think what u mean to say is that u have more in common with someone who's Hispanic then with someone who's not
Im like that, though its not that I prefer Hispanic women, I just think that as Hispanics we share various qualities and activities that are foreign to others
Simply speaking, we like to be around ppl who are interested in the same things/activities
In my case, I've yet to find a non-hispanic woman who likes to speak spanish, would enjoy going to the LA Swapmeet and then would join me in hitting up the local taqueria for some grub
I know where you're coming from Trinitario ;)

I think when I am older I'll marry an Arabic/Mandaean person, probably not a strict Muslim and probably a Mandaean just because we tend to be totally unreligious...But being a Mandaean I assume I have more in common with Mandaean girls or that's what I've gathered, it's weird being a really small ethnicity/community many people don't understand what it's like to be Arab but not to be Arab and also I feel that I should keep 'us' going..Plus, it'd kill my parents  seriously parental pressure to marry at 16 a Mandaean woman and have 100s of kids is beyond words, oh and become a doctor or lawyer or engineer..Of course...I'd just marry a Mandaean just because we have so much in common, I can really connect with a Mandaean person because we're in the same boat.
I don't think what you're doing is racist, it's a sensitive issue and some people can take offense quite easily, which is understandable I guess.

Of course it's not racist to be more interested in people of a particular culture, and latino culture is racially diverse, but that wasn't what Red Menace was asking. I would say yes it is racist if say, a white person is only interested other white people, no matter what their cultural background is, because a person of any "race" can be a member of any culture. Anglo-American culture is probably the most pervasive culture in my life right now, simply because I live in the U.S, speak english, and have european ancestry, but if a person was only interested in white people, simply because s/he doesn't "like" non-whites (which is what Red Menace was asking) then YES that would be racist!

Just some questions to you Noah (excuse my ignorance too, and also if you think you shouldnt answer them then fine :P ) They are out of genuine curiosity without any other intent.
I think when I am older I'll marry an Arabic/Mandaean person, probably not a strict Muslim and probably a Mandaean just because we tend to be totally unreligious..
Do/will you have a choce who you will marry - as in - will it be an arranged marriage?
If so - do you get much information in advance as to who it is you marry?
Why do you think mandeans are unreligious?
How many mandeans are there, and what is their geographic area/homeland?
What separates a mandean from an arab?
I assume I have more in common with Mandaean girls or that's what I've gathered
In what way?
Mandaean person because we're in the same boat.
What boat would that be?
....How did you 'get' into leftist politics coming from such a background?
Would you consider yourself an atheist or would you you have some sort of religious belief?
Your name was once Noah - you changed it and added pbuh in brackets - why and what does that stand for?
Sorry for all the questions Noah - they are out of genuine curiosity and understanding :D

Do/will you have a choce who you will marry - as in - will it be an arranged marriage?
I'll have a choice who I marry, I can marry whoever I want like anyone else! But my parents would prefer me to marry a Mandaean girl but that won't be arrange, they'd just like me to meet one and eventually marry.
If so - do you get much information in advance as to who it is you marry?
Alot more recently, it's become person-orientated like, you just meet someone and it goes from there. However in the past, like in many eastern countries, there is alot of family involvement, for example your mum and aunty and granma would go on a woman hunt and the same for a girls parents
Why do you think mandeans are unreligious?
Mandaeanism is a religion and a language and culture. However, alot of our priests were killed and many of us fled from Iraq & Iran (our 'homeland') because of political reasons (mainly communists) and from oppression in Iran due to the regime...So people fled to many countries and people had alot more to worry about than religion, so they forgot about it..All we knew was Mandaean was a name...
Only recently have people began to 're-group' over the internet, learn the language and culture however when it comes to the spiritual side it's all very interesting for the new generation but ... because we haven't been brainwashed or 'brought up' a mandaean spiritually, we just can't believe it.
How many mandeans are there, and what is their geographic area/homeland?
There's never been a proper count-up of Mandaeans, there is around 50,000 to 100,000. Some people say less (soo many have died after Saddam's downfall probably in 1000s which is alot for us) and we didn't recover from diseases I think cholera from 100 years ago and wars and so on...So the population has never grown some people say it's been stagnant for a century.
The geographic location has changed...alot we began in Ancient Egypt (many Mandaean pots and artifacts were found there) and then scholars believe we went upto Palestine and then to Iraq...Then the British came and gave Khuzestan to Iran and that's why I think Mandaean are now in Iraq and Iran.
Because of the killings I think most Mandaeans have left their homelands, crossed the border to Syria, I've been to the area, it's PACKED with Mandaeans it was cool, I've never seen so many 'of my own kind' only about 100 live in the UK.
We're scattered all over the world with no one really recognising us, we're too small to be important to bourgeois political parties who want support from the masses.
What separates a mandean from an arab?
Different language, different religion (thus different dress rules like women are NOT allowed to wear a headscarf because theyre not asked to and women are holier than men) and different culture...music, food. Up until the 50s you could tell where a Mandaean family lived because they lived by the river and built houses, differently like small and basic and in a certain way, so you'd know.
In what way?
We have the same pressures & same language, it's easier to let your feelings known because when you talk, coming from the same situation and region, they can understand.
....How did you 'get' into leftist politics coming from such a background?
Well my both my parents families were communists. They didn't really have a knowledge about communism (not as much as many of you do here) just communism = equality and that's what they fought for. But now, my mum isn't communist at all and my dad is social democratic...But my dad told me about Che and it started from reading about Che.
Your name was once Noah - you changed it and added pbuh in brackets - why and what does that stand for?
It's just a joke, no offense, to any religious people but...Like in mandaean religion John is the main guy and people put pbuh after his name and like Muslims do with Mohammed I thought it wasn't fair and decided to put it after my name too...We all deserve..peaceful..names..
;)
Here's a news article on us - http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20565787-401,00.html
In Iraq there are systematic killings, it's like every friday evenning is Mandaean hunt (although many others die too) by the Mehdi army. We know a friend who saved her, brother, husband and son after she turned in everything they owned but most aren't so lucky.
And in Iran we're not allowed to go to university and other rights are taken away.
I heard of a guy in Iran, who was Mandaean and tried to do medicine, so he lied and said he was a Muslim now he's in prison.
:(

Isn't Arabic a race, like Caucasian?? You can be Arabic but not a Muslim, I believe a sizeable portion of Arabians are Christian. Not saying you can't considere yourself Irish, just that being Arabic isn't dependent on being a Muslim.

And, of course, those who can only think about dating/marrying one person are numberists, ie, they are bigots prejudiced against threesomes and poligamy...
Its not just, like our reformist comrade LSD has pointed out, that we are politically obligated to find all other human beings sexually attractive, but we must find them attractive at the same time, and go to bed with all of them simultaneously.

Admittedly me not having sex with men, is not much of a social descrimination
No, tbh, I used to have a thing for how "white" a partner's skin was. It just seemed to make her happy that I noticed! Looking back, I wouldn't say (can't remeber if we talked about it much tbh) that sort of thing again. Not sure why, its not like its a social descrimination or anything. Its just like, as another poster has said, maybe it systemic of something unconscious.
