Hi folks

Im originally from South Africa. Moved to the UK and then on to sunny Spain. I live in Granada province near the Sierra Nevada. Beautiful part of the world but its tough going trying to scrape a living here. I still havent quite got a hang of the lingo yet but will soon be going to classes.

Of necessity my political activism is largely if not entirely confined to cyberspace. I am a member of the World in Common group www.worldincommon.org which has a lively forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/worldincommon/ We regard ourselves as being in the non-market anti-statist sector and attract quite a diverse number of people representing different strands in this sector.

I am also in the process of writing a book on the moral economy.

I look forward to interacting with people on this forum

Best regards

Robin

Welcome to the forum!

Is Spain pretty welcoming to immigrants? I'm thinking about moving there myself within the next few years.

Thanks for the comments guys. Its very welcoming!

YSR - Spain is fairly OK about immigrants although there is a degree of ugly racism particularly against Moroccans and West Africans. THe coastline between Adra and Almeria is covered in ugly plastic greenhouses and quite a few illigal immigrants end up there, working for a pittance in the highly toxic and humid environment of the greenhouse. Others flog CDs and exotica in the coastal resorts. If you are from the EU you probably wont encounter much hostility. In fact in the area of Spain where I live, the locals are incredibly friendly and accommodiating. But it does help if you try to converse in Spanish however limited your vocabulary - they appreciate the effort. I dont speak much Spanish but am determined to get to grips with the lingo

Anyway thanks again for the comments

Ciao

Welcome to the forum

In regards to Spain and its treatment of immigrants
As a Latin American I've uncovered alot of subtle racism within the Spanish community towards non-Euro's
Im not speaking in general, but many of the Spanish ppl I've met or have been in contact with here in California have displayed a sense of racism and ethnic superiority
That's what I managed to deduce or literally saw when I encountered these ppl
I've also heard the same thing from other non-Euros who came into contact with the Spanish community
