Have seen this story going round a few circles, probably with the intention of attacking Left leaning governments in Latin America. This Gruaniad article might have the real reason he was deported. Take a look at the last two paragraphs.

Since Morales took office a year ago Castro has sent more than 1,500 Cuban doctors to provide urgently needed medical services in South America's poorest country.

Samartino has helped some of those doctors flee to neighboring Brazil or the United States.

Sounds like he was simply deported since he wasn't in the country legally, boo-hoo.

To be fair, I think thats a dangerous precedent to take. A lot of hispanic workers are in the USA illegally, should they be deported?

This guy appears to have been deported for trying to undermine a programme to improve the healthcare of thousands of Bolivians. Thats whats at stake, not some "free speech" bollocks.

No they shouldn't be deported, but every country has immigration laws, Bolivia is no exception, so it's interesting when Bolivia sends someone back, they're not being deported, they're "extraditing dissidents" Like you said though, the guy is trying to undermine Bolivia's attmept to provide healthcare for its citizens, becuae he wants to make a politcal statement, sounds like a terrible human being to me.

He violated Bolivian law, which says non-citizen immigrants cannot meddle in internal politics. Alot of states have such laws. No big deal.. but of course, since it involves Cuba and the "leftist" Morales.. it gets big coverage.
