Anyone had a chance to decode Gibson's new fest of excess: Apocalypto? I have been asked to write a story on it for a UK newspaper. Interested to know your thoughts. I do this for a living - I did a piece on the Guevara/Salles film last time round.....

While it is a MOVIE, some people are going to really think that they lived in those conditions.

I just want see it because I love the Maya and Guatemala, ever since I took a trip down there. They're really fascinating people with a long and tragic history. It's cool that Mel Gibson used actual Mayans in the movie, although the message is some religious bullshit about how the world is coming to an end.

I read in a review of it that Mel Gibson is the worst thing to happen to the Mayans since the arrival of the Spanish.

Wasn't the whole point that the people such as Jaguar Paw were not the city dwelling people and that they were captured by the mayans and taken to be sacrificed? They seemed to have no knowledge of the Mayan city which leads to believe that they were not apart of the society. I mean I'm not going to defend who Mel Gibson is as a person but his actions shouldn't be a reason for people to bash this movie and say that it is completely wrong and " the worst thing to happen to the Mayans since the Spanish" with no proof.

Same here. They are/were really cool people. I went to Chichen Itza in the Yucutan Peninsula and it was so cool.

APOCALYPTO.. my, OH MY! where do i start???
First thing, great special effects and cinematography! The film kept you on the edge of your seat, and it drew you in. I liked that about the film a lot.
BUT! what a fucking disaster. I now understand why the Mayan people are pissed off! and I would be to! I'm actually bothered at the complete wrong depiction of The Mayan civilization and the times they lived in.
Mel Gibson I guess thought it be cooler and more dramatic to mix Aztec resemblance and events with The Mayan. BIG MISTAKE! HUGE MISTAKE! The Mayan Civilization declined and abandoned it's cities in 900 A.D!!!!!!!! In this Film Mel Gibson seems to confused both civilization. and merged them together. something that never happened. he is 600 years or so OFF! since the Aztec Empire flourished in the 1300's.. 400 years AFTER The height of the Mayans.
The Mayan's weren't know as great hunting warriors or for human sacrifices. I don't even think they did that. The Aztecs were the ones who believed Human Sacrifice and blood will please the gods and make the Sun rise an other day... For some reason Mel Gibson thought it didn't matter and made the Mayans into Sun worshipping people with a thirst for human blood. WRONG!
And at the End of the movie the arrival of what seems to be the 3 ships of Columbus!!!! and if it wasn't Columbus then maybe Hernan Cortez? From the looks of the film it took place during the Height of the Mayan civilization. which this was from 200 AD to 900 AD.
The Spaniards didn't get to Mexico until the 1520's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and they didn't encounter Mayans.
they encounter Tlaxcalans or Totonacs who were actually on bad terms with the Aztecs.
anyways. this movie is all fucked up. Is one thing to add some fiction to make it more dramatic and exciting. but is an other thing to do it at the expense of peoples cultures a heritage!

Mel Gibson really fucked everything up. He's either lying, or just dumb, but the Aztecs and Mayans aren't the same fucking thing, and neither were out-right savages. What a crock of shit this was.

i was mad confused with this movie....come to think about it now,the movie kinda sucked for one, they depicted the "mayans" as animals..secondly i was straight confused wether it was about aztecs or mayas, couse basicaly the sacrifices were more of an aztec rituals then maya..third they have showned like 15 minutes of the civilization, and i agree with rpas about the spanjards.I mean i the movie definetly had mistakes with the history..Mel Gibson needs to get sum background checkin before he makes another atempt at this.....

I'm no expert on the Aztecs. but being Mexican I do know my history and timeline of events pretty darn good. I took it in school and also read on my own. This movie is OFF by 600 years. that a mess. The Mayan people and their culture was bastardized..
Now millions of movie goers will think that, that's what actually happened and how it was! egh!!!

Thats why I don't think anyone should really take movies seriously. Movies usually only depict one part of an event or rearrange the events altogether. I don't know much about the history, but shit, I enjoyed the movie.
As a movie, it gets like 9 1/2 outta 10. But if your watching it for historical accuracy, don't even bother.

The film was not talking about how the world was actually coming to an end, but how their civilisation was coming to an end.
When the Europeans landed in the Americas the brought diseases and stuff with them. Whatever remained of the Mayans and other natives of America was pretty much wiped out when Europeans arrived, i.e. their world ended.
