What are the current attitudes and offical policies of the Republic of Ireland towards unification of Ireland? We often hear about various parties and paramilitaries in Northern Ireland, I have heard little of where the Republic of Ireland stands on this situation. A little history wouldn't hurt too.

I dont know much about the policies of the government at the moment, but i can tell ya from personal experience that about 95% of people here want unification. Some would speak out more openly that others though.

Fianna Fail consider themselves the republican party!that should tell you something ;)

If you wanna know anything specific, just ask.

I believe Fianna Fail (the ruling party in teh Republic of Ireland) resently registered too contest elections in Norther Ireland, so it would seem they are rather pro-unification.

Go on home, British Soldiers, go on home!
Have you got no fuckin' homes of your own?
For 800 years, we've fought you without fear!
And we'll fight you for 800 more!

In the past two years or so all of the main parties in the twenty-six counties have stuck their republican colours to the mast. Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, the PDs, and the Labour Party have all rediscovered their republican roots (for some it's been somewhat awkward, as Fine Gael for instance was formed by the merger of fascists and pro-Free Staters).

It may be argued that this has occurred because of Sinn Féin's rising percentage of the vote, or because the official end of the IRA's war last year has made it safer and more respectable to be a republican amongst the southern establishment. Nonetheless, most of the population support reunification, though many would be quite passive about it.

There is also a small group called the Reform Association that wishes to see Ireland reunified within the British Commonwealth. Needless to say they're not taken seriously by most people.
